An exciting Spring 2012 season with the University of Baltimore's Spotlight UBalt series will feature an eclectic array of performances, including classical music, opera, slam poetry and theater. All of the events will take place in UBalt's celebrated Lucy and Vernon Wright Theater, on the top floor of the UBalt Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
Spotlight UBalt's spring season will continue its artistic partnership with both the Aspen String Trio and the Figaro Project. In addition, the series is furthering its commitment to social justice theatre by producing Jessica Blank and Erik Jansen's play The Exonerated during the spring Ethics Week, hosted by the University of Baltimore's Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics.
Spotlight UBalt's spring schedule is as follows:
Feb. 8, noon: Singer/songwriter Queen Earth kicks off the fourth annual African American Arts Festival, co-sponsored by the Diversity and Culture Center and the Center for Student Engagement and Inclusion. Free and open to the public.
Feb. 9, 7 p.m.: National Poetry Champion Gayle Danley joins UBalt poet performer Templein hosting a poetry slam as part of the African American Arts Festival. $5 general admission, $2 for students.
Feb. 10, 7 p.m.: Stand-up comic, author, and Head of the Class alumnus Rain Pryor performs her one-woman comedy tour de force Fried Chicken and Latkes before it moves to off-Broadway in April. The show is part of the African American Arts Festival. $15 general admission, $10 for senior citizens, $5 for students.
Feb. 15, 7 p.m.: The Aspen String Trio returns to campus for a series of residencies culminating in Czech Please!, a concert featured Czech composers Martinu, Klein and Dvorak. Hosted by radio personality Jonathan Palevsky and featuring pianist Rita Sloan. $15 general admission, $10 for seniors, $5 for students.
March 8-10, all performances at 7 p.m.: Rain Pryor directs Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen's play The Exonerated, the story of six wrongly-convicted Americans who served on death row. The powerful production will kick off with a panel exploring the death penalty issue. $15 general admission, $10 for seniors, $5 for students.
April 20, time to be announced: Chamber music society Vivre Musicale performs Seduction: Eve with two sopranos, a piano, a flute and a viola. Featuring the compositions of Debussy, Villa-Lobos, Faure, Piazzolla and Laderman, the music will track the story of life in Eden. Ticket prices to be announced.
May 11-12, both performances at 7:30 p.m.: Contemporary opera group Figaro Project returns to campus with an operatic murder mystery Who Killed Don Giovanni? Murder is on the menu with seven suspects and more than enough Mozartian motives to go around. $10 general admission, $5 for students.
