The University of Baltimore's Student Center Gallery is paying tribute to the unique contributions that African Americans have made to the world of music. "Black Voices," an exhibition of record albums and sheet music, celebrates a number of classic black images from a variety of genres, including gospel, soul, blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll, and R&B. The collection includes both LP art—that's the cover of Ruth Brown's album And Her Rhythmakers/Sweet Baby of Mine above and on the home page—along with several examples of graphic treatments that were used to market sheet music, a sometimes forgotten aspect of music as art object. "Black Voices" serves as a cogent reminder of the many great black artists who have contributed to the development of modern music, and how their innovations moved and inspired people of all colors.
The covers are from the Conrad Schafran Collection in the Special Collection Department at Langsdale Library. Learn more about the collection.
The gallery is located on the fifth floor of the UBalt Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
