Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch, the Baltimore-based writer responsible for the masterpiece of civil rights narrative history known as the "America in the King Era Trilogy" (Parting the Waters; Pillar of Fire; At Canaan's Edge), will visit the University of Baltimore School of Law on Monday, Nov. 23 to discuss his latest work, The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President. Branch (pictured on the home page with then newly elected President Clinton in a White House photograph) will read from and discuss the book starting at 6 p.m.; a book signing and cocktail reception will follow. It will take place in the Venable Baetjer Howard Moot Court Room, located in the John and Frances Angelos Law Center (the School of Law building), 1415 Maryland Ave.
This event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is requested by Wednesday, Nov. 18. (Details below.)
Taylor Branch has gone from magazine journalist (he served as assistant editor of the Washington Monthly, Washington editor of Harper's, Washington columnist for Esquire, and as a writer for other publications including The New York Times Magazine) to best-selling author, along the way earning praise as one of the greatest living documentarians of American history. Parting the Waters received both the Pulitzer and the National Book Critics Circle Award for General Nonfiction in 1988, while Pillar of Fire received the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award in 1999.
Branch, who has called the King trilogy "my major life’s work," received a five-year MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" in 1991, as well as the National Humanities Medal in 1999. His new book on the former president is the product of dozens of interviews and talks between the two, beginning when Clinton was in the White House.
"Branch's conversations with Bill Clinton yielded deep insights and a revealing portrait of White House life," said The New York Times.
