"Health and the Urban Child: Diagnosing Problems and Prescribing Solutions," the second annual Urban Child Symposium hosted by the University of Baltimore School of Law's Center for Families, Children and the Courts, will take place on Thursday, April 1 beginning at 9 a.m. in the John and Frances Angelos Law Center (home of the School of Law), 1415 Maryland Ave. The event, free and open to the public (attendance details below), will bring together policymakers, physicians, advocates, resource providers and other experts to consider the health-related consequences of inner city living for children and their families. Elijah E. Cummings, U.S. Representative for Maryland's 7th District and a national leader in the movement to improve health care for children, will offer a noontime keynote address. Joshua M. Sharfstein, principal deputy commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and former health commissioner for the City of Baltimore, will deliver a morning talk on the challenges and stresses that affect urban children, as well as their access to health care.
Urban children and their families face multiple acute health challenges due to where they live. Many lack the basic resources necessary to stay healthy, including affordable and nutritious food, safe areas where children can exercise and high-quality medical care. At the same time, children and their families confront problems such as poverty, lead paint poisoning, pollution, substance abuse and violence. The consequences of these obstacles are predictable, as inner-city children do more poorly on health measures than do their peers living in more supportive environments. "Health and the Urban Child" aims to spark an important conversation to address and to propose remedies for some of the daunting issues these children encounter.
