Passager, a University of Baltimore-affiliated journal and press dedicated to older writers and artists, will mark 21 years of publishing with a conference on Friday and Saturday, June 17-18, on the UB campus. The conference will feature workshops on creative writing, journal keeping, publishing strategies for the older writer, as well as an open mic reading for participants.
"Burning Bright: Passager Summer Writers Conference for the Older Writer," will include overnight accommodations near the UB campus in midtown Baltimore, as well as a temporary market for participants to sell or exchange their works with others. Writing groups as well as individuals are invited to attend this unique event.
"Editing a journal has put us in touch with many writers around the country (and world) and we seldom have the chance to meet them in person," said Passager editors Mary Azrael and Kendra Kopelke. "Our wish is to gather our readers, writers and newcomers for conversation, readings and workshops.… We want time to talk about the life of an older writer and artist. What does experience tell us? This new sense of urgency, this fire in the imagination, this desire to record, reflect and find new meaning? What are the challenges and the opportunities for the older writer and artist? Together, we want to imagine our collective future."
The conference will begin June 17 at 4 p.m. with a reception and reading on the fifth floor of the University of Baltimore Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. On Saturday, June 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be workshops on creative writing and activism; writing about war; creative journaling; writing and loss; publishing strategies for the older writer; featured readers and an open mic for participants. Beginning at 8 p.m., the conference will culminate with a reading to launch Passager's new anthology, Burning Bright: Passager Celebrates 21 Years, containing its most memorable poetry, fiction and memoir. The reading is free and open to the public. No conference registration is required.
Passager is an independent journal and press dedicated to assembling a range of voices and subjects that bring to light the collective imagination of older writers, along with the perspective that comes with experience.
