University of Baltimore School of Law Interim Dean Michael Higginbotham has been named a winner of The Daily Record's 2011 Leadership in Law Award.
"We are proud to honor Michael Higginbotham as one of The Daily Record's Leadership in Law Award winners for 2011," said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of the newspaper. "Dean Higginbotham embodies those traits that spurred The Daily Record to establish these awards 11 years ago, namely outstanding leadership within the legal profession, betterment of the community at large and a true willingness to mentor future leaders."
The newspaper received more than 100 nominations for the awards this year, solicited from The Daily Record's readers, area law firms, bar associations, chambers of commerce, and the business and legal communities at large. Nominees were then asked to complete an application that explains what they have accomplished in their careers to distinguish them as outstanding leaders in the law. A distinguished panel of judges reviewed the applications and selected 25 winners for 2011. The winners were honored at a reception and luncheon at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve, and were profiled in a special magazine included in the Nov. 21 edition of The Daily Record.
Higginbotham serves as the Wilson Elkins Professor of Law at UB. He is a nationally known expert on equal protection law, race relations and human rights, and has served on several state and federal judicial nomination commissions and advisory panels.
The newspaper began the Leadership in Law Awards in 2000 as a way to recognize the outstanding work being done by members of the legal community throughout Maryland.
The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the School of Law, the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Public Affairs and the Merrick School of Business.
