'Emerging Financial Issues in Health Care' Symposium Explores Future of Health Law, March 8

"Emerging Financial Issues in Health Care," a one-day symposium on the significant legal impact of the nation's ongoing health care reforms, will take place at the University of Baltimore School of Law on Thursday, March 8. Featuring a keynote address, "Incentivizing Innovation and Development in the Healthcare Industry through the Patent System," by the Hon. Pauline Newman, circuit judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the symposium will bring together experts from a number of disciplines directly involved in tracking and instituting reforms. It will serve as an opportunity for members of the legal and medical communities to develop a better understanding of changes in the health care arena. The event, presented by the University of Baltimore Law Review and the Johns Hopkins University/University of Baltimore Center for Medicine and Law, will take place in the School of Law's Moot Court Room, 1415 Maryland Ave. It is free and open to the public; an R.S.V.P. is requested for all attendees. The day's agenda is as follows:
9-10 a.m.: Registration and a continental breakfast available in the lobby of the law center for all attendees.
10 -10:15 a.m.: Welcoming remarks by F. Michael Higginbotham, interim dean of the University of Baltimore School of Law, and James Denvil, editor-in-chief of the University of Baltimore Law Review.
10:15-10:45 a.m.: Opening address: "America's Healthcare Costs Conundrum," by M. Gregg Bloche, professor at the Georgetown University Law Center and co-director of the Georgetown-Johns Hopkins Joint Program in Law and Public Health
10:45-11 a.m.: Break.
11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Panel discussion: "Medical Malpractice—Costs and Alternatives," with presenters Kathleen Howard Meredith, J.D. '78, of Iliff, Meredith, Wildberger & Brennan, P.C.; Gene Ransom, J.D. '96, CEO of MedChi, the Maryland State Medical Society; and Darren P. Mareiniss of the Department of Emergency Medicine in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
12:30-1 p.m.: Lunch will be served in the lobby of the law center for attendees.
1-1:45 p.m.: Keynote address, "Incentivizing Innovation and Development in Healthcare Industry through the Patent System," by the Hon. Pauline Newman, circuit judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
1:45-2 p.m.: Break.
2-3:30 p.m.: Panel discussion: "Healthcare Financing—Problems, Comparisons, and the Future," with presenters Miriam J. Laugesen, assistant professor of health policy and management in the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health; Gerard Anderson, director of the Center for Hospital Finance and Management in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Policy; and Sara Wilensky, special services faculty for undergraduate education in the Department of Health Policy at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.
Following this discussion, closing remarks will be offered by Gregory Dolin, associate professor in the University of Baltimore School of Law and co-director of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine/University of Baltimore School of Law Center for Medicine and Law.
