The 2012 Region III National Moot Court Competition will take place Nov. 16-18 at various locations in the University of Baltimore School of Law, 1415 Maryland Ave. UB boasts 21 moot court teams—a number believed to be the largest for any law school in the country. UB's teams compete in 19 different interschool moot court competitions, and two compete in the National Moot Court Competition.
Nine teams from various law schools will compete in this year's Region III contest. They include Georgetown University Law Center, Temple University's James E. Beasley School of Law, the University of Baltimore School of Law (two teams), the University of Maryland School of Law, the University of Pennsylvania School of Law, the
University of Pittsburgh School of Law, and Villanova University Law School (two teams).
For the past 11 years, the School of Law has sponsored the Region III Competition of the National Moot Court Competition. More than 60 judges and attorneys serve as brief grading judges, or as mock Supreme Court justices for oral argument. The members of the University of Baltimore School of Law Moot Court Board serve as assistants to judges and competitors, clerks of the court, bailiffs and timekeepers.
The National Moot Court Competition is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious interschool moot court competition in the nation, among the more than 60 competitions. The competition is sponsored by the Young Lawyers Section of the New York City Bar Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers. More than 150 teams compete in 15 regional meets. Thirty regional champions and runners-up will compete at the national level in New York City next January.
Byron L. Warnken, associate professor of law, serves as faculty adviser to the University of Baltimore School of Law Moot Court Board. For 18 years, he coached a UB moot court team, including coaching the National Moot Court Competition team for 12 years. Since 2002, he has served as Region III director. Warnken has been involved in more than 250 actual appeals, including seven cases at the Supreme Court.
