The Daily Record has named 12 members of the University of Baltimore community to its 2013 list of "Maryland's Top 100 Women," including Darlene Brannigan Smith, B.S. '78, M.B.A. '80, dean of the University of Baltimore's Merrick School of Business and professor in the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, and Patria de Lancer Julnes, professor in the School of Public and International Affairs within the College of Public Affairs. Smith (left in photo on UB's home page) will also be inducted into the Circle of Excellence, a special recognition reserved only for those who have been named to the list three times. In addition, nine UB alumnae and an advisory board member are included in this year's list.
The Daily Record, Maryland's business and legal newspaper, announced this year's honorees March 1. Created in 1996, this program recognizes outstanding achievement by women who have demonstrated significant professional accomplishments, outstanding community leadership and inspirational mentoring; more than 1,000 women have been honored to date.
Smith, a respected marketing scholar and the first alumna to lead the University's School of Business, returned to campus in 2005 as associate dean and was appointed dean in 2008. Under her leadership in the past year alone, the UB/Towson M.B.A. program made U.S. News & World Report's list of the nation's best online programs, the business school introduced new programs including the M.S. in Innovation Management and Technology Innovation and the school led a University-wide effort to encourage and support entrepreneurship. Smith has published in leading marketing journals, graduated from the Leadership Maryland program and from the Greater Baltimore Committee's Leadership Program and serves as president of LIVE Baltimore's board of directors.
Julnes (on the right in photo on UB's home page), director of UB's Doctor of Public Administration program and a UB professor since 2008, has focused her professional career on areas including performance measurement and innovations in public management. Her research and teaching have taken her around the world: She has worked to establish a public administration program in her native Dominican Republic, served as a consultant to Chilean officials on the country's delivery of governmental services and studied government reform in Latin America. Some of her most recent work involves assessments of the Hispanic community’s participation in governance. Julnes is also the immediate past president of the Young Hispanic Leaders Association.
"The UB community extends our congratulations to Dean Smith and Professor Julnes," said Robert L. Bogomolny, president of the University of Baltimore. "As those of us on campus know, they are both well-deserving of this recognition. We applaud all the distinguished UB community members who are being honored this year."
Smith and Julnes will be recognized along with their fellow recipients at a May 6 award celebration at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Other UB recipients include:
