University of Baltimore School of Law alumnus Peter Angelos, LL.B. '61, has donated $5 million more to the school's new John and Frances Angelos Law Center, strengthening an ongoing effort for the building to attain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum rating by the U.S. Green Building Council—a status that will help it become a national model for sustainability in law-school building design. This marks the third major gift from Angelos to the project, which is named for his parents, and brings his total project support to $15 million.
"Once again, I wish to express my personal gratitude and the thanks of the entire UB community to Mr. Angelos," said UB President Robert L. Bogomolny. "His extraordinary generosity will help assure that this equally extraordinary building will stand as a model of sustainable architecture and as an enduring symbol of the quality of the UB School of Law."
Designed by world-renowned architect Stefan Behnisch of Behnisch Architekten in Stuttgart, Germany, and Boston, Mass., in partnership with Baltimore's Ayers/Saint/Gross, the building marks a new era for the University of Baltimore and for its many constituencies. The center, set to open next month with a series of high-profile grand opening events (see below for details), boasts an array of technologically robust, highly practical ways of conserving energy and reducing material waste. Among these are:
- active capture of light and temperate air, via operable windows, computerized air- handling systems and skylights
- green roofs on several levels, which will reduce stormwater runoff
- organic flooring and other sustainable products and finishes.
The law center recently received two awards from the Maryland chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council: the USGBC 2012 Wintergreen Award for Innovation in Sustainable Design and the USGBC President's Award. The Wintergreen Award for Innovation in Sustainable Design recognizes an outstanding project that exhibits excellence in green building design. The President's Award honors a project owner "who has the courage to reach for the highest achievement in sustainable building."
About the Law Center's Grand Opening
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan will join Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert M. Bell and a host of state, local and federal officials and legal luminaries for several grand opening events for the new center. Throughout the month of April, a number of invitation-only and public events will take place to mark the building’s debut:
- a Preview Celebration on Tuesday, April 16, featuring remarks by Vice President Biden and Gov. O’Malley
- a Ribbon Cutting on Tuesday, April 30, for the UB community, neighbors and guests
- a Grand Opening Celebration, also on April 30, featuring remarks by Justice Kagan, Chief Judge Bell and UB School of Law Dean Ronald Weich.
These events will offer guests an opportunity to have a first look inside the building, which is nearing completion after more than two years of construction. The center is located at the northeast intersection of North Charles Street and Mount Royal Avenue in midtown Baltimore.
