The University of Baltimore School of Law's 86th commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 20 at 1 p.m. at the Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric, 140 W. Mt. Royal Ave. in Baltimore.
Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, will serve as commencement speaker. The University System of Maryland Board of Regents will present her with an honorary doctor of laws degree.
Pelosi, a Baltimore native, has represented San Francisco in Congress for 25 years. She has led House Democrats for a decade, and from 2007 to 2011 she served as Speaker of the House. She is the first woman to do so in American history.
The Christian Science Monitor wrote in July 2010: "[M]ake no mistake: Nancy Pelosi is the most powerful woman in American politics and the most powerful House Speaker since Sam Rayburn a half century ago."
Pelosi's father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., served as mayor of Baltimore for 12 years (1947-59) after representing the city for five terms in Congress. Her brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III, also served as mayor of Baltimore (1967-71).
At the commencement ceremony, President Robert L. Bogomolny and School of Law Dean Ronald Weich will offer remarks, as will School of Law Valedictorian Annie Vanselow, J.D. '12. In addition, two students will be recognized for academic excellence and service to the law school.
A video of the School of Law's commencement ceremony is now available.
Receiving degrees will be approximately 326 J.D. students and 15 LL.M. students.
Admission is by ticket only and space is limited. Members of the media who wish to attend commencement should contact Hope Keller, the School of Law’s director of communications, at 410.837.5648.
The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the College of Public Affairs, the Merrick School of Business, the UB School of Law and the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.
