The University of Baltimore will hold commencement for its fall 2013 arts and sciences, public affairs and business graduates on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric, 140 W. Mt. Royal Ave. Commencement for undergraduate and graduate students will take place beginning at 2 p.m.
Acclaimed author and UB educator Taylor Branch will provide the event's keynote address. Branch, winner of the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for History for his book Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-63, will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, presented by UB Provost Joseph Wood.
In recognition of the civil rights movement's 50th anniversary, Branch and UB will introduce an online course, entitled Citizenship and Freedom: The Civil Rights Era, in collaboration with the University System of Maryland's Center for Innovation and Excellence in Learning and Teaching, this spring.
During the ceremony, all candidates for degrees will be presented to Merrick School of Business Interim Dean Frank Navratil, College of Public Affairs Dean Stephen L. Percy, Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences Dean Laura Bryan and President Robert L. Bogomolny, who will then confer degrees and certificates to all graduates. Tom McMillen, representative of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, Jeff Glock, B.S. '88, president of the UB Alumni Association, and Bogomolny will greet the graduates and their guests. Deborah Hitchcock Carson, senior class representative, will offer remarks.
