John Bessler, associate professor in the University of Baltimore School of Law and a noted expert on capital punishment, will speak on the death penalty at the 26th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis on Saturday, March 1. The talk, which will be held as part of the forum's "Faith and Peace Day" (one of four days devoted to various themed events), is open to the public. The location will be announced shortly.
Bessler will be part of a three-person panel, alongside Robin Maher, director of the American Bar Association's Death Penalty Representation Project, and Rosalyn Park, director of research for The Advocates for Human Rights, a Minnesota-based non-governmental organization focused on international human rights standards.
Bessler is the author of four books on capital punishment, including 2012's Cruel and Unusual: The American Death Penalty and the Founders' Eighth Amendment. His law review articles have appeared in the Indiana Law Journal, the Arkansas Law Review, the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review and elsewhere. Bessler also teaches a capital punishment seminar as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center.
The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is a unique civic learning experience. This dynamic, public, global event brings Nobel Peace Prize winners, civic leaders, and scholars together with students and other citizens. As the Norwegian Nobel Institute's only such program or academic affiliation outside of Norway, the forum has a special mission: to inspire peacemaking by celebrating the work of Peace Prize winners.
