Seema Iyer, associate director of the University of Baltimore's Jacob France Institute and a research assistant professor in the Merrick School of Business, tells the Baltimore Sun that the economic development of Baltimore is critically dependent on the success of efforts to create new communities, both within and across existing neighborhoods.
In an article about the rising number of young people making Baltimore their home, Iyer joins other experts in talking about how the city can sustain its current uptick in growth.
"If we can create communities, not just in those neighborhoods, but create communities across neighborhoods, they'll feel like Baltimoreans and start investing not only their retail dollars but also their emotional dollars," Iyer said. "Building community is going to be critical in order to have them feel like this is their home for the long term. That will be the real benefit, instead of just having 25- to 34-year-olds churning through the city."
