The 2004 edition of Nota Bene, the magazine of the University of Baltimore School of Law, has received an award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. The edition, themed A Global Point of View, received a bronze award in the category of Individual Institutional Relations/Alumni Relations Publications from CASE District II (www.casetwo.org). District II covers a geographical area including Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ontario, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The magazine is a joint effort of the School of Law and UB’s Office of University Relations. The winning issue was edited by Karen Rae Hammer, associate dean for Career Services in the law school. Catherine Leidemer, manager of communications in University Relations, serves as managing editor. Gigi Boam, associate director of University Relations, is the art director for the magazine. The publication receives input from various staff members as well as freelance writers, photographers and artists.
“It is a great honor to receive this recognition from our colleagues in the field,” said School of Law Dean Gilbert Holmes. “This is an important affirmation that our key publication is achieving the level of quality and thoughtfulness that we consistently strive for. Nota Bene is a wonderful snapshot of the incredible energy and ideas being cultivated at the University of Baltimore and our School of Law. Everyone associated with the magazine should be quite proud.”
The award-winning issue, which was published in fall 2004, showcased the global reach of the School of Law. It featured articles on a UB alumna who traveled to Egypt and later started a civil-rights nonprofit, a graduate who is doing government-funded legal work in Serbia, as well as a reprint of an academic journal article on Japanese law schools co-written by a faculty member.
The online version of the magazine is available at http://www.ubalt.edu/glance/ur_portfolio/NotaBene/fall_04/index.html
The bronze award will be presented to UB representatives during the annual District II conference in Pittsburgh on Feb. 5-7. The event is expected to draw an estimated 600 CASE members, who comprise the advancement, alumni relations and institutional communication functions of higher-education institutions within District II.
The University of Baltimore is an upper-division, graduate and professional university. UB—the state’s career-minded university—is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the School of Law, the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts and the Merrick School of Business.
