Two students from the University of Baltimore School of Law—Ashley Bosche and Kristen Ross—have been invited to participate in the national finals of the American Bar Association’s Law Student Division Negotiation Competition. Bosche and Ross, both second-year students, will travel to the ABA’s midyear meeting in Chicago on Feb. 11-12. They will compete with students from law schools across the country in a simulation in which they act as lawyers to negotiate a series of legal problems.
UB School of Law Dean Gilbert Holmes said the school will be “very well represented” by the two.
“Ashley and Kristen have proven themselves repeatedly in this realm to be excellent negotiators—a key skill that all good lawyers must develop,” Holmes said. “Everyone in the law school is cheering them on.”
Bosche and Ross were invited to participate in the national finals after winning the ABA Law Student Division’s Intra-School Competition, which was held at the law school on Oct. 21. They went on to compete in the Regional Competition, held Nov. 12-13 at Washington and Lee University School of Law, where they finished second among 24 law school teams from the region. They wrapped up the competition undefeated, having bested teams from Washington and Lee and Georgetown University Law Center.
Bosche is from Berlin, Md. She earned her undergraduate degree from High Point University, where she majored in history. Her future plans are either to become a prosecutor or a civil litigator.
Originally from Sarver, Pa., Ross earned her undergraduate degree in English language and literature from the University of Maryland, College Park. She plans to remain in Maryland and hopes to become a prosecutor for the state.
According to the ABA, the Law Student Division Negotiation Competition “promotes greater interest among law students in legal negotiation and provides a means for them to practice and improve their negotiating skills.” The simulations start from a common set of facts known by all participants as well as confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side.
The Law Student Division sponsors four national competitions annually, in negotiation, arbitration, client counseling and national appellate advocacy. The competitions offer participating students a forum to develop their skills for use in the practice of law, as well as an opportunity to network with fellow students.
The University of Baltimore is an upper-division, graduate and professional university. UB—the state’s career-minded university—is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the School of Law, the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts and the Merrick School of Business.
