The University of Baltimore School of Law will celebrate its fourth annual Litigation Skills Week March 6-10 with a slate of seminars and sessions highlighting the special skills involved in the practice of law. Featured events include two training opportunities, both involving techniques for effective courtroom presentations; the induction of five awardees into the school’s Legacy of Excellence in Litigation Hall of Fame; and a working session of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Unless otherwise indicated, all events will be held in the University's John and Frances Angelos Law Center, 1429 Maryland Ave., and are free and open to the public. Events begin on Tuesday, March 6, with "Examination of the Expert Witness: Techniques for Excellence," presented by the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Trial Lawyers. The seminar begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Venable Baetjer Howard Moot Court Room; a reception will be held in the law school lobby from 7-9 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 7, the Court of Special Appeals will be in session to hear oral arguments beginning with a seating at 9 a.m.; the arguments will be heard from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The session will take place in the Moot Court Room.
On Thursday, March 8, "Ethics in Litigation," a seminar presented by the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers, will be held beginning at 5 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. A reception will follow from 6-8 p.m. in the lobby.
On Friday, March 9, a seminar, "Improving Law and Order: Future Police Officers, Prosecutors and Criminal Defense Lawyers Training Together in a Pilot Program" will be held beginning at noon in the Moot Court Room. This event is presented by the Stephen L. Snyder Center for Litigation Skills and the Baltimore City Police Academy.
On Saturday, March 10, Litigation Week reaches an apex with its fourth annual Legacy of Excellence in Litigation, a black-tie-optional induction ceremony for five UB School of Law alumni from the Maryland legal community. The event will be held at the Belvedere, 1 E. Chase St. in Baltimore, beginning at 6 p.m. This year's inductees, who have demonstrated significant and enduring influence in the expertise for litigation for at least three decades, include Jack B. Rubin, J.D. '64, attorney with Rubin and Owens P.A.; the Hon. Richard H. Sothoron Jr., J.D. '69, judge for the Circuit Court for Prince George's County; Dale P. Kelberman, J.D. '74, principal at Miles & Stockbridge P.C.; Barbara Bechtol Mello, J.D. '76, professor at the University of Baltimore and attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union (presented posthumously); and the Hon. Joseph I. Cassilly, J.D. '77, state's attorney for Harford County. The 2007 Charles Hamilton Houston Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to George L. Russell, an attorney with the Law Offices of Peter G. Angelos. This honor, which is presented annually to recognize a lifetime career of achievement in litigation, is conferred only on friends of the University of Baltimore School of Law who are not graduates of the institution. Parking for all Litigation Week events will be available in the Maryland Avenue Garage, located at the corner of Maryland Avenue and Chase Street. Attendees are asked to park above the third level. Shuttle service will be available for transportation to the School of Law.
