The University of Baltimore School of Law has hired Rebecca Saybolt Bainum, former managing director of the Clinical Law Program at the University of Maryland School of Law, as its new director of Academic Services. Bainum, a member of the Maryland and Massachusetts bars, will be responsible for academic counseling for law students, including visiting and transfer students; organizing orientations for first-year students and new faculty; assisting student groups including the Honor Board; coordinating curricular advisement sessions; and a host of other duties related to law students' academic achievement.
Prior to coming to the University of Baltimore School of Law, Bainum coordinated the law practice component of clinical experience for students at the University of Maryland School of Law and also taught the summer clinic and professional responsibility. In 2006, Bainum served as the staff associate for the Maryland Judicial Campaign Conduct Committee, where she coordinated and managed legal, financial and administrative aspects of the then-newly formed citizens' committee to study and monitor the conduct of contested judicial elections in Maryland.
From 2001 to '06, she was project director for The Women's Law Center of Maryland, Inc., where she developed and carried out a statewide statistical research project on family law issues and supervised the organization's various legal projects, including the court-based domestic violence programs.
From 1997 to 2001, Bainum was an attorney for Weisman & Associates, a plaintiffs' side litigation firm in Boston, where her caseload included complex civil litigation including product liability, civil rights, medical negligence and education claims. She also served as a manager for law firm administration. Prior to that, she was legal counsel to the Office of Massachusetts State Senator Cheryl Jacques from 1995-97, and, from 1988 to 1992, program director for the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City.
Bainum received a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law, and a B.A. in Russian, cum laude, from Amherst College.
The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the School of Law, the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts and the Merrick School of Business.
