Charles Tiefer, professor in the University of Baltimore School of Law and former solicitor and deputy general counsel of the United States House of Representatives for 11 years prior to joining the faculty, has been named one of three new members of the Commission on Wartime Contracting. Established last January, the commission is charged by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives with "addressing the systemic problems associated with the federal government's wartime-support, reconstruction, and private security contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi named a co-chair and three additional commissioners, including Tiefer, to the commission on Friday, June 20. Other new members will be named by the White House and senior members of Congress.
Tiefer teaches contract law and government contracts, and leads a workshop on legislation. Prior to his arrival at UB, he taught as a visiting lecturer at Yale Law School and as an adjunct at Georgetown University Law Center. Tiefer holds a B.A., summa cum laude, from Columbia College, and a J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School. In 1996 he served as deputy minority counsel of the U.S. House's "Bosniagate" investigating sub-committee, and in 1987 as special deputy chief counsel of the U.S. House Iran-Contra committee.
Tiefer is the author of a number of publications, including the book Government Contract Law: Cases and Materials.
