BALTIMORE--The University of Baltimore continues its "Journey to Justice: The 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education" series, a yearlong celebration marking the landmark decision that ended legal segregation in public schools. The next events in UB's series, spearheaded by the University's libraries, include the following. All events are free and open to the public.
Monday, April 12

Brown bag lunch lecture, "Brown v. Board of Education: Finding America," by John L. Hudgins, associate professor and chair of the Coppin State College Department of Social Sciences.

Panel discussion on "Brown v. Board of Education: The Maryland Experience." Moderated by Jessica Elfenbein, associate professor of history in the University of Baltimore's Legal, Ethical and Historical Studies program, the panel will include UB student and Eastern Shore native Mary Carol Shanahan, AFL-CIO community representative Jay Smith, UB employee Bernadette Williams, and UB friend Emma Weldon.

Susan Goering, executive director of the Maryland chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, will speak on "A Survey of Current Civil Liberties and Civil Rights Issues." This event is part of the a.m. law-Ginsberg Seminar Series.

Larry Gibson, professor in the University of Maryland School of Law, speaks on "The Aftermath of Brown in Maryland." Gibson will note the ways that Brown served as a catalyst for the state's civil rights movement.

Ophelia Gona, daughter of Rev. J. A. DeLaine, the NAACP organizer instrumental in putting together the case of Briggs v. Elliot, the South Carolina case that was part of the Brown v. Board collective, will speak on her family's experiences as a result of her father's involvement in the case. Gona serves as director of Pre-College Programs at the New Jersey Medical School, University Of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. This event is sponsored by UB's Phi Alpha Theta and the Jurisprudence Association.
