Residency

Your residency status determines whether you pay in-state or out-of-state tuition. When you first apply to UB, the Offices of Admission determine your status based on the information submitted on your residency application, which is part of the full admission package. As an applicant, it is important that you complete the residency application completely.  You will be notified on your residency status in your letter of admission.  You may also check your status on your MyUB page once you have been accepted. 

If you are a new student the Maryland In-State Residency Status form application is part of the on-line or hard copy admission materials.

If you are a current student and your residency status has changed you need to file a Petition for Change in Residency Application. 

The application and all required documents must be filed by the appropriate deadline: August 15th to be considered for fall; December 15th for spring; May 15th for summer. The change in classification isn't retroactive -- it goes into effect beginning in the term for which you filed. You may only file an application once each term.

The burden of proving you qualify as an in-state resident rests on you. If you don't provide complete and timely information, your request may be denied.

Non-resident University applicants who have graduated from a Maryland high school and completed 60 credits or an Associate's degree at a Maryland Community College may be eligible for a non-resident tuition fee exemption under legislation passed by the Maryland General Assembly (the Dream Act).  The Non-Resident Tuition Fee Differential Exemption Request should be submitted with the appropriate documentation after a student has been admitted to the University.
