We’re recruiting for a recreation professional with a relevant bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience in recreation programming in higher education to serve as our Assistant Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness – Competitive Sports and assume primary responsibility for the Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs programs. Your duties will include developing and educating the student supervisors, officials and club leaders; financial account management; recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising student staff, as well as, sport club coaches; equipment management and maintenance; tracking all club travel; and continually reviewing risk management. Through the refining of our competitive sport programs, university outreach, and the continuous development of events focused on competitive sports, you will create a stronger environment to cultivate change and strengthen University goals related to sports and recreation. In addition, you will provide support to the Director with regard to facility planning and student engagement, proper service practices, and other issues impacting recreation programs and the campus community.
Provide visionary oversight for the Campus Recreation and Wellness programs – Competitive Sports and Special Events.
- Define the mission, establish goals and set the objectives for programs.
- Hire, supervise, train, develop and evaluate staff.
- Guide staff in aligning functional area strategic directions with University and Divisional strategic directions and learning outcomes.
Manage the day to day operations of the Competitive Sports programs
- Assumes primary responsibility for daily operations and management of the Intramural and Sport Clubs programs. This includes planning, scheduling and supervising all activities related to the program (IM leagues, captains meetings, weekly meetings, practice schedules, special events), including club travel on a local, regional and national level. Oversees all policy development and implementation, risk management, financial management, travel planning, and equipment management. Continually assesses and revises program structure according to current needs. Track and maintain statistical reports on participation, travel, injuries, equipment, and other pertinent information on a semester and annual basis.
- Administers Sport Club Management Software including all financial transactions, club registration, and member communications.
- Coordinate the recruiting, hiring, training, managing, scheduling and supervision of student employees. This includes managing the timekeeping of student timesheets, maintaining personnel records, developing training materials, and conducting in-service workshops. Recruit, hire, and manage volunteer coaches and instructors as necessary.
- Serve as advisor to Sport Club Council for all policy and procedure matters, budget allocations, sanctions and overall program development. Acts as a liaison to the Student Government Association as needed. Oversees education and development of all club officers and staff through club officer trainings, workshops, and enhancement opportunities. Advises club officers for fundraising, travel, competition, and recruitment.
- Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the competitive sports equipment including facility renovations, aesthetic additions, and equipment upgrades. Develop and oversee any associated contracts and service agreements.
- Responsible for creating, updating and revising standard operating procedures; employment training manuals; sport/activity rules, regulations and guidelines for program areas.
- Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the recreation facilities and equipment including facility renovations, aesthetic additions, and equipment upgrades.
Advising, hiring, supervising, and scheduling of contractual, student, and volunteer staff
Coordinate the recruiting, hiring, training, managing, scheduling and supervision of student employees. This includes managing student timesheets, maintaining personnel records, developing training materials, and conducting in-service workshops. It also includes recruiting, hiring, and managing volunteer coaches and instructors as necessary.
Assist with the leadership and administration for Campus Recreation and Wellness
- Responsible for creating, updating and revising standard operating procedures; employment training manuals; sport/activity rules, work out area policies and dress codes, regulations and guidelines for program areas; assists with developing employment training manuals including safety rules, regulations and guidelines for program areas.
- Assist with the management of the Recreation Center Management Software. This includes input of recreation programs products, serving as a backup point of contact for student staff and assisting with the software training of student staff.
- Serve as point of contact for CRW facilities staff in absence of the Director. Assist with facility staff training and the continued development of facility policies and procedures. Assist with the daily deposits of Recreation Center memberships and guest passes.
- Assist with the leadership, management and administration for the Campus Recreation and Wellness. This is to include mentoring students and promoting a student development philosophy within CRW.
- This position is responsible for assisting in supervising select evening and weekend programs including facility operations, informal activities, off campus events, and assigned programs.
- Serve in the Student Affairs on call rotation, assist in crisis management during on-call rotation, and enforce University policies.
University Outreach related to competitive sports
- Represent CRW on the Student Affairs Traditions Committee and participate in the development and supervision of CRW Welcome Week events and activities.
- Develop evaluation tools to assess the student perspective on university outreach, including the effectiveness of the recreation programs and their impact on the campus community.
- Increase the presence of the CRW on campus, increasing opportunities for student interaction and feedback about the student experience with recreation programs.
- Develop and update office publications, communications, forms, social media and website content.
Divisional and University Committee Participation
Represent the University of Baltimore, Campus Recreation and Wellness, and serve as a student advocate on a variety of divisional and university committees.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in sports management, recreation, or related field required. Also requires at least 3 years of experience with recreation programming in higher education. General knowledge of intramural sports and sport clubs. Skills in scheduling leagues and practices, as well as event/tournament management. Financial management experience. Hiring and training student staff, advising student groups. Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ability to work a flexible daily routine to include evening and weekend hours.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in sports management, recreation, or related field preferred. Experience with intramural sports and sport club programs in a university setting and knowledge of comprehensive sport clubs program administration preferred. Also preferred: Red Cross CPR/First Aid Instructor Certification, experience with Innosoft Fusion facility management software, proficiency in the use of social media and the ability to create, manage and update web presence, and fitness and wellness experience or certifications.
