Working closely with the Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement (AVP) the successful candidate will have the opportunity to take complete ownership and build a comprehensive prospect identification, research and management program. He or she will work strategically with the Assistant Director of Research and other fundraising colleagues, program staff and volunteers to advance the philanthropic priorities of UB.
The Director is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive research program that identifies and qualifies potential and current donors (individuals, corporations and foundations) who have the capacity to provide philanthropic support to the University. In addition, provides relevant information to help facilitate strategy development, engagement and solicitation of prospective and current donors. The person must maintain the professional and ethical standards set forth by the Association of Prospect Researchers for Advancement (APRA). Responsibilities include:
Participates in portfolio reviews with development leadership and development officers to develop prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and overall fundraising strategies.
Provides ongoing prospect pipeline analysis. Collects donor information and classifies prospects according to interest, affinity and financial capacity in addition to prioritizing the donors for follow-up by development staff.
Proactively identifies potential donors by developing prospect lists using in-house and external resources. Increases the quantity and quality of information on all known potential donors capable of giving $25,000 or more.
Conducts and composes in-depth prospect research as needed to support donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Interprets and synthesizes large volumes of data and complex financial, legal and technical language into easily comprehensible information.
Organize and conduct screening sessions with many constituencies of the university, including university leadership, alumni association leadership, board members, campaign committees and volunteer groups, development staff and others who can help identify, cultivate and solicit gifts.
Actively participates in prospect management and strategy meetings, including tracking the prospect pipeline, preparing “moves management” reports and providing recommendations regarding cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Supervisory responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Research
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree
Experience: At least 5 years of prospect and research management experience. Experience in research methods and information retrieval, evaluation and selection of relevant data, interpretation of financial records and reports. Experience with databases and strong experience and proficiency with Microsoft products.
Preferred Education and Experience
Education: Master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Capital campaign experience a plus. Raiser’s Edge, moves management, and advance research experience also preferred.
Additional Qualifications
Knowledge of the range of resources available to prospect researchers including, but not limited to, print directories, research software, internet sources, and town records.
Researcher should be able to initiate searches using multiple resources as needed.
Requires excellent organization, written and oral communication, research and analytical skills.
Ability to manage multi-faceted projects and a capacity to perform well independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment, exhibiting grace under pressure.
Ability to utilize independent judgment and decision-making skills. Experience in higher education a plus.
