The Planned Giving Officer works to attract significant private support for University priorities, through the design and implementation of a strategic and effective planned giving program. This includes actively managing a portfolio of planned gift prospects and donors; helps to support and mentor other colleagues in their planned gift work; and directs stewardship programs related to planned gifts to ensure long·term commitment of donors to the University. Interacts with the campus community, volunteers, alumni, business and community leaders, attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, and others in carrying out the responsibilities of the position. In addition, builds and maintains relationships with professional advisors to help provide information needed, as donors work with their advisors to build gift provisions into financial and estate plans. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Develop and grow a comprehensive planned giving program with the goal of increasing revenue with deferred gifts. Responsibilities include actively managing a portfolio of planned gift donors and prospects; prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and closure of gifts. Collaborate effectively with Major Gifts, Annual Giving, and Research colleagues within the Development Office to maximize the potential of current donors for blended gift opportunities, and identifying planned giving prospects. Apply expert knowledge of charitable gift planning techniques & planned giving opportunities to maximize private support. Apply knowledge of planned gift vehicles and asset types to structure planned gifts with maximum benefit to donors and the University. Build and maintain relationships with professional advisors to encourage gifts and assist donors in incorporating gift provisions in financial and estate plans. Prepare gift proposals for donors and advisors. Increase participation In the Turner Society.
Program Management and Strategic Planning includes developing a stewardship program related to planned gifts to ensure long-term commitment of donors to UB. With the assistance of the Associate Director of Donor Relations, design and organize events for the Turner Society and prospects, and promote planned giving to new and previously identified prospects. Develop compelling marketing plan to encourage planned giving among UB's broad range of constituents.. Ensure accurate and timely bequest stewardship and administration; oversee and communicate with attorneys and personal representatives of estates where UB has been named as a devisee or beneficiary.
Demonstrated experience as a successful Planned Giving Officer or related experience. Ability to interact successfully with individuals of high net wealth, donors, volunteers, senior administrators and staff, utilizing tact, diplomacy and poise. Excellent and highly developed written and oral communication skills. Ability to present planned giving information to both lay and professional audiences in a way that will inspire philanthropy. High-level technical expertise to design strategic plans and implement planned giving program. Knowledge of planned giving vehicles including bequests, CGAs, CRTs, gifts by beneficiary designation, real estate. Demonstrated skills in developing strategic relationships and working effectively with donors, prospects, as well as their legal and financial advisors. Strong experience in collaborating with major gifts, annual giving and research colleagues. Willingness to focus on team goals as well as individual targets. Knowledge of all aspects of fundraising principles and practices. Understanding of the moves management process and the ability to think strategically. Excellent organizational skills, highly task and detailed oriented. Ability to manage both time and workload independently to support multiple fundraising activities and initiatives is essential. Appreciation of UB's strategic plan and vision and the ability to effectively communicate the mission. The capacity to maintain confidentiality and represent UB with professionalism. Proficient in the use of relationship management software and planned giving software- Raisers Edge and PG Calc preferred. Knowledge in preparing illustrations for gift proposals.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Financial Management, or other related field/discipline that would enhance the responsibilities and/or focus of the incumbent’s expected performance and achievements.
Experience: Three years progressively responsible experience as a development professional focused on planned giving.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Financial Management, or other related field/discipline that would enhance the responsibilities and/or focus of the incumbent’s expected performance and achievements. The preferred Master’s degree can be substituted for a Juris Doctorate.
Experience: Five years of experience with wealth management, financial or legal background a plus. Development experience in higher education.
