Serving in the Office of the Comptroller, within the Division of Administration and Finance, the Assistant Comptroller provides management, supervision and support to the accounting/financial services and functions including payroll processing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and revenue recognition. This position provides management and oversight to accounting supervisory and operational staff; this includes assessing needs, and developing and facilitating training of financial service functions to university constituents, as needed. The Assistant Comptroller uses sound judgment and critical thinking skills to analyze, enhance, review, and correct the reconciliation of general ledger and profit & loss accounts on a monthly basis. This role ensures collaboration between the Office of the Comptroller’s team and other university departments and encourages teamwork and collaboration. The Assistant Comptroller is responsible for evaluating the Board of Regents and University policies and procedures to ensure and encourage effective and efficient internal controls and regulatory compliance. The position facilitates internal and external audit fieldwork and assists with the preparation, analysis, and review of various financial reports and schedule. Serves in the place of the Comptroller when needed.
Required Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or Economics and five years related accounting experience with three years of progressive management and direct supervisory experience in a financial/business setting within a university or comparable organization required.
Strong background knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and state of Maryland policies, procedures and laws pertaining to the operation of public universities, non--profit business entities and sponsored projects. The ability to establish goals, structures and processes that align with the institutional plan, vision and short term priorities. Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to perform with a high degree of diplomacy, confidentiality and professionalism. Proven applicable experience working in and extracting data from an Enterprise Resources Planning system, business analytics or other relevant systems applications and business software. The ability to influence and lead others outside of reporting lines to achieve common goals and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
MBA or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance or CPA preferred. Exceptional candidates will have public accounting and staff development experience. Experience with PeopleSoft Finance, Student Finance, or Human Capital Management modules desired.
