The Director of Veteran and Military Student Services will provide strategic direction for the Bob Parsons Veterans Center, coordinating activities and services supporting veterans, active military and military affiliated students to enroll, achieve success and move to complete their degrees at the University of Baltimore. Working with a variety of Students Affairs, Enrollment Management & Marketing and academic colleagues, the Director will participate in the development and implementation of military affiliated student recruitment strategies and provide support to students who receive veteran or military educational benefits. The Director will review and evaluate existing policies, procedures and support services that affect veteran and military students, making recommendations for improvements. The Director will collaborate with divisional partners and other university colleagues to improve students’ experiences and enhance retention of military affiliated students. The Director will work with the University’s Institutional Advancement office to cultivate community and alumni relationships to enhance veteran and military student career and job prospects.
Manage the Bob Parsons Veterans Center, coordinating activities and services supporting military affiliated students to enroll, achieve success and complete their degrees. Manage student employees working in the Center in their engagement with students. Provide and maintain informational materials within the Center. Assist with advancement and fundraising to support the growth and expansion of services. Work with the Director of Operations and Development to manage budgets within the operation.
Academic Initiatives and Retention
Provide leadership to the UB Veterans Advisory Council in the review and evaluation of existing policies, procedures and support services that affect veteran and military students. Through the Council, make recommendations for improvements, collaborate to improve the student experience and enhance retention of military affiliated students at UB. Collaborate to provide access and referral to campus services to enhance success. Services include, but are not limited to: admission, orientation, registration, financial aid, benefits, academic advising, learning support services, ROTC, and any other service that provides support to military affiliated students on campus or within the Baltimore community. Develop and implement assessment programs designed to identify student needs and measure veteran student success. Maintain knowledge of PeopleSoft and other data systems that track and monitor military, veteran and military affiliated students. Work in partnership with UB stakeholders to develop initiatives designed to enhance student persistence, success and graduation (i.e. Prior Learning Credits, Early Alert program, Boots on the Ground project, CARE team, etc.)
Participate in the implementation of a military affiliated student recruitment strategy. Collaborate with the Admission Office, Center employees and student groups to support the achievement of enrollment objectives. Collaborate with the university Marketing Office and Admission to create appropriate communications. Maintain the BPVC webpage, social media outreach and office data collection.
Maintain knowledge of federal and state legislation, rules, policies and procedures pertaining to veteran student benefits. Collaborate with the UB Certifying Officials, Financial Aid and Student Accounts third party billing staff to ensure compliance with all federal and state rules and regulations governing veteran student benefits. Interact with all staff in the one-stop-shop for enrollment services to ensure consistent and quality services for students receiving these benefits.
Mange the development, delivery and evaluation of educational programs, resources, trainings and outreach for students, faculty and staff, including all aspects of development, logistics and implementation. Develop and implement a variety of transitional programs to facilitate military and veteran student transitions from the military to an academic and civilian environment. Develop and distribute materials, resources and training to raise awareness within the UB community about issues facing military and veteran students. Create, plan and implement veterans and military recognition activities and events (i.e. Memorial Day, Salute Our Troops Week, Commencement recognitions) in collaboration with campus and community partners. Serve as a liaison with campus military and veteran student groups.
Develop and maintain partnerships with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Semper Fi, Maryland Humanities Council, Maryland Center for Veteran Education and Training (MCVET) and other local, regional and national veteran service organizations to further enhance UB’s military and veteran initiatives. Operationalize the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Baltimore (UB) and the VA Maryland Health Carew System (MANHCS), a medical facility of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), for support of the VA’s Veteran Integration to Academic Leadership program (VITAL) that provides educational and outreach to students and university staff. Collaborate with the University’s Institutional Advancement Office to cultivate relationships with UB alumni for future donations/gifts and to enhance veteran and military student career prospects. Participate in and contribute to local and national conferences and professional organizations related to the issues and needs of military affiliated students.
Education: Baccalaureate degree in Psychology, Sociology, Communications or other related field/discipline
Experience: Five years progressively responsible experience with relevant veterans and military student education benefits and counseling. Two years of demonstrated leadership and managerial skills. Current/prior military service.
Education: Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Conflict Management or a related field.
Experience: Two years of experience in higher education administration. Two years of experience in a counseling or advisory capacity working with students, particularly veteran and military students.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Relevant experience and knowledge of veteran and military student education benefits and counseling. Proven ability to establish, cultivate and maintain good working relationships and collaboration with collegiate stakeholders and community partners. Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive issues, assess complex situations, and hold ethical and professional standards. Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal, electronic and written communication skills. Proven ability to multi-task and meet deadlines. Ability to develop and implement assessment strategies and reports. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn and use institutional software systems.
