The Science Laboratory Coordinator position in the Division of Science, Information Arts and Technologies (SIAT) is broad in scope and responsibilities, involving such diverse activities as fixing microscopes, ordering course supplies, producing and implementing a chemical hygiene plan, producing and updating student laboratory exercise packets, assisting in the implementation of faculty and student research projects, and taking photos for a laboratory atlas of specimens. Science Laboratory Coordinator responsibilities:
• Manage all activities related to the setting up, implementation, and breaking down of the following laboratory courses: ANTH 252, ANTH 320, BIOL 111, BIOL 121, ENVS 221, ENVS 285, ENVS 300, and ENVS 375.
• Order all necessary equipment and materials for labs as necessary.
• Manage disposal of various waste streams and keep laboratory clean and orderly.
• Provide material and logistical support to students engaged in undergraduate research
• Maintain all equipment, such as microscopes, water baths, biosafety cabinets, chemical fume hoods, etc., for the archaeology, biology and environmental science laboratories.
• Train and supervise the student laboratory assistant(s). Assist in hiring a student laboratory assistant on an annual basis.
• Provide adjunct instructors with orientation, all necessary laboratory instructional materials, and lead weekly meetings with faculty regarding future and past laboratory exercises.
• Serve as the first level of management of laboratory safety, including student orientation, adherence to the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and monitoring of the chemical inventory.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education: Baccalaureate degree in Science or related field/discipline.
Experience: Two years in science laboratory inventory management, equipment maintenance, materials procurement, and safety.
• Can manage science laboratory inventories and budgets.
• Can procure laboratory materials and equipment.
• Can maintain instructional/research equipment.
• Can work independently and develop characteristic schedules of lab duties
• Has knowledge of regulations and protocols with respect to laboratory safety.
• Is skilled in basic light microscopy.
• Has the ability to relate information to, and generally monitor the activities of, science
instructors.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Education: Master’s degree in Science or related field/discipline
Experience: Four years in science laboratory inventory management, equipment maintenance, materials procurement, and safety.
