Reporting directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean of Students leads the School of Law in all areas pertaining to students including academic advising, academic integrity and progression, and student affairs. Most critically, the Assistant Dean must be able to work effectively with law students and be vested in their success. The individual must have the ability to build rapport with students and provide counsel and advice to both students and colleagues as they navigate often sensitive and confidential matters. The Assistant Dean provides guidance and ultimate oversight over law student organizations and their leaders. This individual also works closely with faculty, staff, university administrative offices, and other constituents of the law school. The Assistant Dean implements and helps to develop strategies that enhance the academic operations of the School of Law. This individual must use his or her good judgment to make decisions on behalf of the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) which requires a thorough understanding of the academic policies of the School of Law, University and University System of Maryland to assure consistency and compliance. With his or her team and in collaboration with others, the individual manages and leads a number of critical projects. Additionally, this individual supervises members of the OAA team and also serves as part of the law school’s senior leadership team. The Assistant Dean must have excellent communication skills, as s/he communicates regularly with his or her team and with constituents in the law school and university.
Academic Advising and Student Affairs - Directly supervise the Director of Law Student Support and the Student Affairs Coordinator. In collaboration and coordination with the OAA team:
• Advise students on all academic matters, including academic policies and course selection.
• Determine transfer course equivalencies for law coursework and determine student satisfaction of degree requirements.
• Provide oversight and serve as a liaison for all law student organizations and act as the advisor to the Student Bar Association.
• Advise students in crisis, including communicating with faculty as appropriate, making arrangements for getting course information to students when emergency circumstances cause them to miss class, and referring students to counseling or other support services as appropriate.
• Serve as the Title IX point of contact for students at the law school.
Academic Integrity and Oversight - Provide leadership and oversight of student affairs.
• Oversee all aspects of student affairs, including, but not limited to, student issues related to faculty relations, degree completion, grievances, and persistence.
• Administer all matters under the Law School’s Honor Code, including recruitment, selection and training of Honor Board members, assigning investigators, selecting hearing panel members, scheduling hearings, and assisting in communicating decisions.
• Work with the Associate Dean and the Office of Academic Affairs staff on student academic appeals and requests, including administrative withdrawals, grade changes, program changes, grievances, etc. Recommend decisions on policy as needed to administration and faculty committees.
• Coordinate update and revisions to the law school student handbook and honor code. Coordinate and assure updates to degree audit as academic requirement change. Disseminate information to law school students, faculty and staff.
Orientation - Plan and administer new student orientation, including developing the schedule, communicating with incoming students, recruiting students, faculty, and outside speakers, and making all arrangements for catering and supplies.
Exam Administration - Provide leadership and oversight over the administration of all law school exams. Activities include: processing deferral requests, managing exam receipt and distribution and student training on exam software, scheduling and training proctors, acting as head proctor, and managing distribution of exam answers to faculty.
Other - Serve on relevant faculty committees within the School of Law and represent the law school within the university including as liaison to the Center for Student Involvement. Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
Required Education and Experience
Education: Juris Doctor JD from an ABA accredited law school
Experience: Five years of progressively responsible role in academic and student advising leadership in a higher education institution. Experience in higher education, in areas of academic policy, advising, academic integrity and student affairs.
Preferred Experience
• Academic leadership experience in a Law School
• Counseling Experience and/or degree in counseling
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and presentation skills and attention to detail.
• Experience in acting with the highest level of diplomacy, confidentiality and trust.
• Supervisory experience and the ability to set a positive tone, project a professional and positive image of the School of Law and University.
• Ability to network and interact effectively with key groups and individuals to form effective partnerships.
• Ability to provide advising/counseling/mentoring to law students with particular sensitivity for the needs of diverse students
• Sound understanding and sensitivity to student, faculty and staff issues related to: diversity and inclusion; communication and interaction; leadership and supervisory skills; knowledge of organization; creativity and innovation.
• Demonstrated skills and abilities to perform and achieve the following: planning and results; assessment, evaluation and outcomes; productivity and quality of work
• Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and the ability to learn new platforms such as those for exams, course and enrollment management
