Job Description
The Director of Alumni Relations is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive outreach and engagement program for University of Baltimore alumni. The Director of Alumni Relations is located in the Office of Institutional Advancement, the central fundraising and engagement office for the University. S/He therefore understands the important role the Office of Alumni Relations plays in developing a fundraising pipeline and plans activities that complement the goals of the fundraising team and the comprehensive capital campaign. The ideal candidate recognizes the majority of UB alumni were non-traditional students whose college experiences differed from those who chose the traditional college path and takes this into consideration when developing engagement goals and planning activities that will strategically engage and serve UB alumni.
The Director oversees all communications, volunteer engagement, event development, coordination and execution, programs, and budgeting for the Office of Alumni Relations and the UB Alumni Association. S/He is an ambassador for both the University and alumni and will build relationships and collaborate with colleagues in Institutional Advancement, in the University’s four schools, and program managers to create and maintain open channels for alumni involvement, which includes building a robust alumni volunteer program.
Responsibilities
The Director of Alumni Relations manages the daily operations of the Office of Alumni Relations and has the primary responsibility of planning and developing strategic engagement activities for UB alumni in partnership with IA colleagues. S/He establishes goals for alumni engagement and monitors and evaluates outcomes of alumni engagement efforts to determine if overall goals were met. This person serves as the lead in connecting with campus partners to build a robust alumni volunteer program. Also, this position helps develop the annual Office of Alumni Relations budget held by the UB Foundation, is responsible for managing income and expenditures, and ensures that staff is working within allocated budgets.
The Director also oversees the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations in the developing a comprehensive communications plan for the Office of Alumni Relations and the UB Alumni Association, which also includes the production of the annual issue of the University of Baltimore Magazine. They work with IA and campus colleagues to discover, develop and share alumni stories and testimonials. Office of Alumni Relations communications will complement the University’s marketing activity and the Office of Institutional Advancement’s overall fundraising and stewardship plans.
The Director also manages the development, coordination, execution and follow-up for University-wide alumni events which include, but are not limited to: an annual Orioles Night at Camden Yards, regional happy hour and networking events, career-related programs, program-focused activities, and other event opportunities that arise over the course of a year. The Office of Alumni Relations partners with the Office of Donor Relations to recognize alumni volunteers. Alumni events will be developed to complement the Office of Institutional Advancement’s overall fundraising and stewardship plans.
The Director of Alumni Relations reports to the Assistant Vice President for Alumni and Donor Services and manages two full-time Alumni Relations staff. S/He may also serves as a liaison between faculty/staff and alumni advisory boards/committees, as required.
Required education: Bachelor’s degree
Required experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in alumni development, engagement, fundraising, sales, volunteer management or related work experience.
Prefer previous experience in higher education. Database (Raiser’s Edge), Adobe Creative Suite, or other design and publishing software experience a plus.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Strong management skills and the ability to manage, motivate, and evaluate staff.
• Strong interpersonal, leadership, and decision-making skills. Ability to forge partnerships, and grow and maintain relationships strong partnerships with alumni, students, faculty and staff.
• Volunteer management experience.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; creative problem-solving skills and ability to effectively
prioritize workload.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to organize, implement and evaluate programs and analyze results.
• Budget experience.
Some evening and weekend work is required.
