The Director of Law Student Support is an important part of the School of Law’s Office of Academic Affairs and plays a critical role in providing academic advising, counseling, and support for law students. The Director helps students with difficult personal and social/emotional issues that may arise in the course of their studies and arranges appropriate solutions. S/he works to develop programming that promotes students’ wellbeing, resilience, and academic success. The Director of Student Support serves as a key liaison between students and other university departments to assure student success and completion, including ensuring that students with disabilities have appropriate accommodations to which they may be entitled. The Director develops and implements academic policy and programming, ensuring compliance with ABA-mandated policies for law students. The Director of Student Support also develops and implements programming and policies aimed at law student organizations to promote an inclusive, vibrant law school community. Key Responsibilities
The Director of Student Support’s primary role is to provide academic advising, counseling and support to law students as part of the law school’s Office of Academic Affairs. In that role, the Director:
• Advises students regarding academic decisions, including course plans for future semesters, requirements for joint degrees and concentrations, and bar readiness.
• Meets with students on probation to help improve their academic performance including discussions about course loads, study habits, time management skills.
• Advises students and faculty regarding curriculum and degree requirements.
• Communicates with faculty concerning student issues.
• Fields and resolves student concerns, problems, and complaints.
The Director ensures compliance with academic and other student-facing policies. The Director does that by:
• Reviewing transfer student transcripts for acceptance of credits by UB
• Performing and supervising degree audits prior to graduation
• Coordinating and implementing academic policies related to joint degree programs
• Certifying students completion of concentrations within JD program
• Conducting initial review of student petitions for exceptions to academic requirements or policies
• Ensuring that the academic portion of the website is up-to-date and provides accurate information about the law school’s academic program including maintaining the student handbook
• Reviewing ADA documentation to develop and administer accommodation agreements
• Working with staff to ensure academic compliance through roster verification, proper attendance records, and other course policies
• Directing faculty-student mentoring program, including training faculty on applicable academic policies
The Director, in collaboration with law school colleagues and committees, helps to develop and implement programming and processes for law student organizations and for law students that:
• Build leadership skills, assure the highest quality programming by their organizations, and increase opportunities for all students to form meaningful social and professional connections
• Enhance wellness, resilience, and professionalism
• Cultivate an inclusive student community, including for the School of Law’s LLM students
• Address student concerns relating to discrimination, including sexual harassment, violence, and abuse
• Improve the financial literacy and inform students about consequences of debt
• Improves the student experience with university offices such as Records, Registrar, Financial Aid, and the Business Office
Evening availability required at least 2 nights per week during the academic year. Weekend availability required from time to time.
Required Education and Experience
Education: Juris Doctor JD from an ABA accredited law school
Experience: 3 years of progressively responsible work experience in student services, counseling, student advisement, law practice, or similar field
Preferred Experience
• 5 years of experience in student services, counseling, student advisement, law practice, or similar field
• Experience working with students or as a mentor
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Ability to provide advising/counseling/mentoring to law students with particular sensitivity for the needs of differently-abled students
• Exceptional written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work with diverse populations of students
• Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and the ability to learn new platforms such as those for exams, course and enrollment management
• Demonstrated success in program management and collaborative leadership
