Serving in the Office of Financial Aid, within the Division of Administration and Finance, the Financial Aid Counselor must have exceptional customer service skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. This position is responsible to ensure quality financial aid counseling and service, and timely delivery of student financial aid to a diverse constituency. Support financial literacy programs for UB students, with strong emphasis on retention and reaching degree completion with minimal loan debt. Provide quality one-on-one counseling and financial aid advice for undergraduate, graduate and professional student populations. This position has a direct impact on the enrollment and persistence of students. This position requires flexible work schedule to meet the demands of the student population. Perform all duties exercising high touch customer service and with a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities:
Manage all aspects of financial aid processing for undergraduate, graduate and professional student populations. This includes responsibility for determining eligibility, processing awards, and monitoring eligibility status. Provide outbound customer services to address student and family inquiries. Address questions and concerns providing high touch customer service.
Support retention and enrollment efforts. Meet with prospective and current students for individual or group sessions for financial aid counseling and financial literacy. Conduct financial aid outreach workshops as requested and participate in other recruitment and retention events.
Support other Financial Aid staff members and other university departments (Admissions, Records/Registration, Bursar, Advisors, and Student Success and Support Services) on financial aid programs and student status. This includes responding to specific financial aid program or student requests, handling issues escalated from front line staff, and supporting senior counselors and the Associate Director with special programs (Direct Loan, Pell, MHEC, etc).
Ensure the integrity of data and program accuracy through the continual review of financial aid data and system-generated output, queries and reports. This includes participation in program reconciliations. Use PeopleSoft and other systems to perform role. Develop technology and system skills.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelors’ degree
Experience: One year of professional experience in higher education, accounting, business or customer service
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Some Master's level course work
Experience: Two years’ experience in higher education financial aid and/or student financial programs dealing with students and families. One year of PeopleSoft or other electronic financial aid management system.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a comfort level dealing with students. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work as a team to get things done. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint programs. Excellent written, verbal and electronic communication skills. Ability to provide exceptional customer service. Ability to work under pressure and apply critical thinking skills. This position requires flexible work schedule to meet the demands of the student population.
