Reporting to the Manager of Undergraduate and Graduate Advising in the Merrick School of Business, the main purpose of this position is to offer academic advisement to undergraduate and graduate business students. The position promotes student success, retention, enrollment, and program completion in several key ways, including providing academic advising to students in undergraduate and graduate academic programs regarding class scheduling and degree completion planning; and supporting academic leadership with data regarding student matters, such as enrollment management, recruitment, personal circumstances, past activities, honors and awards, and internship placement, as well as providing input on student scheduling needs and graduation application reviews. Advisement also includes providing guidance to students and faculty regarding academic policies and procedures. Other duties include promoting the visibility of the Business School by representing the programs at community college fairs, information sessions, open houses, and orientations. Collaborates with the institutional advising teams to enhance student success, retention rates, and communication regarding academic policies and procedures.

Duties include:
Serve as academic adviser to assist undergraduate and graduate students with course selection and development of a plan of study for most efficient completion of the degree program based on students’ needs. Utilize multiple formats to encourage student success and retention via frequent checkpoints and messaging. Assist in the interpretation and explanation of academic policies to students, including but not limited to grievance procedures, and other issues outlined in the academic catalog. Stay current with technology used to support student success initiatives e.g. Salesforce Advisor Link, PeSo notes, degree audit, etc.
Assist in the interpretation of new students’ transfer credit evaluations. Inform current students regarding policies transferring in credit(s) if needed while a student at UBalt and assists them with completing appropriate forms. Provide basic information about other academic requirements (i.e., placement testing, registration and withdrawal process, required grades, etc.) and deadlines that support academic success. Assist student with finding coursework at another university if under special circumstances the class must be taken elsewhere.
Assist in the formalization and implementation of plans to improve the current probation/suspension policy for retention purposes. Review academic reports frequently used by advisors to assist in ease of reaching out to students and assisting academic leadership in reporting. Provide outreach via text/email/phone/virtual formats to students who are on probation or have other academic and/or wellness concerns by providing information on campus resources, academic success skills, as well as strongly encouraging one-on-one advising appointments. Advisors will serve as a connection point with the Offices of Financial Aid and Student Accounts.
Participate in student orientation and other campus activities that enhance the academic experience and recognize scholastic achievement. May provide presentations at student open houses outlining the program’s assets, requirements, and admission process as part of recruitment and retention efforts.
Contribute to marketing UBalt’s programs and participate in the preparation of informational and marketing materials. Inform students of upcoming events on campus in collaboration the Career and Internship Center, Student Success and Support Services and Center for Student Engagement.
** Special hours of work required: Approximately 6-8 daytime weekend hours (Saturdays and Sundays) for advising and open houses hosted at UBalt. Some evening hours.
Required Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in Business, Education, Counseling, or other related fields/disciplines contributing to the success of the incumbent.
Experience: Two years of experience working in advising or academic program support and/or coordination in a college or university or other higher education organization.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in Business or other related fields/disciplines that contribute to the incumbent’s success.
Experience: Two to five years of direct experience in advising or academic support within a school of business. Utilization of PeopleSoft, Salesforce Advisor Link or other CRM/SIS systems.
