The University of Baltimore seeks a dynamic, motivated and creative Senior Director of Development. The Senior Director of Development in partnership with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VP) manages and directs the university’s fundraising programs including major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, and planned gifts programs. In collaboration with the VP and Assistant Vice President, the Senior Director of Development plays a pivotal role in planning and executing fundraising campaigns that support the priorities and strategies of the institution. S/he will establish annual goals, hold development staff accountable, work with development officers, and collaborate with deans, directors and campus partners to create and execute donor strategies, provide training and mentorship to fundraising staff, as well as maintain a portfolio of high-level prospects. The Senior Director of Development reports directly to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and serves on the senior leadership team. Local and national travel is essential. The ideal candidate will have the ability to absorb, embrace, and articulate the mission of the University of Baltimore. Superior interpersonal skills with proven ability to successfully interact and collaborate with varied constituencies in a professional manner, including deans, faculty, program directors, volunteers, and foundation leadership. Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated tact and diplomacy in working with a wide variety of personalities is required. A high degree of professionalism, ethical sensitivity and discretion, plus ability to maintain a commitment to confidentiality, good judgment and proven responsible decision-making skills are also needed. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and analytical skills with ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic plans, and the ability to lead groups and projects as well as function as part of a collaborative team. The Senor Director of Development will manage multiple projects and priorities and meet challenging and changing deadlines, have a proven track record of closing significant gifts, develop strategies to achieve fundraising goals, analyze results and adjust plans to reflect those results. Travel and occasional evening and weekend work is needed.
Key functions of the position include serving as a front-line fundraiser with primary responsibilities of establishing and managing effective relationships with varied donor prospects and major gift and planned gift donors. Focus will be on campaign planning and strategizing, identifying and cultivating new major gift and planned gift prospects and designing and implementing successful cultivation and solicitations strategies with a focus on major gifts of $50,000+ across all four colleges and schools. Responsibilities also include developing strategies with the fundraising team to maximize the potential of current donors for blended gift opportunities and identifying planned giving prospects; collaborate with the Associate Director of Donor Relations develop a stewardship program related to planned gifts to ensure long-term commitment of donors to UB and develop individual and team fundraising goals and monitor progress and performance. S/He will also grow a comprehensive planned giving program with the goal of increasing revenue with deferred gifts.
Required Education and Experience
Education: Baccalaureate degree in Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Financial Management, or other related field/discipline.
Experience: Five to seven years of progressively responsible development experience focused on major, principal and/or planned gifts.
Preferred Education and Experience
Education: Master’s degree in Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Financial Management, or other related field/discipline.
Experience: Seven plus years of progressively responsible development experience focused on major, principal and/or planned gifts, preferably in higher education. Campaign experience is a plus. Two years of supervisory/managerial experience.
