The Prospect Researcher is an experienced prospect research professional with data analysis and analytics experience and excellent communication skills. These skills, along with experience conducting thorough research will assist in crafting accurate and confidential reports on corporations, foundations, major gift donors, and prospects to University leadership, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Major Gift Officers, Board members, and other senior officers of the University. Critical thinking skills are required to provide assistance in implementation of the strategic plan and for cultivation and tracking of major gift donors, suspects, and prospects, and with maintenance of the prospect management fields within the Raiser’s Edge database. Outstanding organizational skills are required to monitor and participate in research activities including data collection, evaluation, and analysis, assisting in the maintenance of the Raisers Edge database, and updating prospect information and reports in the system. This position will manage all responsibilities while consistently maintaining the professional and ethical standards set forth by the Association of Prospect Researchers for Advancement (APRA). The position will also assist in interpreting and holding others to such standards when utilizing Institutional Advancement resources or information provided by the Prospect Research office.
Key responsibilities include:
* Conducting in-depth prospect research to support prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Synthesizing large volumes of often complex financial, legal, and technical information. Composing clear and comprehensible reporting of all necessary and relevant information, meeting the client's needs both in timeliness and content.
* Monitoring and actively participating in research activities including data collection, evaluation, and analysis using a wide variety of original source material including public documents, legal records, periodicals, proprietary databases, professional organizations, professional contacts, and other methods. Regularly reviewing publications for alumni updates and prospecting.
* Assisting the Director of Prospect Research in maintaining the prospect module of major gift donors, suspects, and prospects and coordinating input of major donor and prospect data, gift data, call reports, etc. into the Raiser’s Edge database. Playing a crucial role in all facets of prospect management, including working with lA and associated faculty as needed and facilitating the prospect management meetings in the Director's absence.
* Researching corporate and foundation prospects for new development opportunities as requested. Also working to identify matches between University initiatives and new or existing corporate and foundation programming.
* Working effectively with the Director to develop new research methods and techniques, as new software and information resources become available. Assisting Director in the construction and implementation of strategic initiatives using knowledge gained through work and educational experience.
Required Education and Experience
Education: Bachelor's degree in field/discipline related to direct prospect research, tracking, data analysis or related development or research field required. Relevant experience can be considered equivalent to education on a year for year basis.
Experience: At least 2 years of institutional advancement or other research/administrative translatable experience. Basic knowledge of data analysis and analytics. Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office Suite of products, including advanced Excel querying and reporting. Preferred Education and Experience
Education: Advanced research training and/or similar educational experience, at least four years of prospect research with prospect management experience, and Raiser's Edge or similar CRM experience are preferred.
Experience: Experience in a fundraising campaign environment, preferably in the area of major gift prospect research. Experience in higher education a plus. Knowledge of current philanthropic landscape/ philanthropic history in Baltimore is useful.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of the field of prospect research and development.
* Ability to write clearly, think critically, and work quickly. Position requires excellent organization, as well as superior skills in both written and oral communication.
* Ability to utilize independent judgment and decision-making skills. Must be unafraid to ask questions.
* Ability to manage multi-faceted projects and a capacity to perform well independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment, exhibiting grace under pressure.
* Understanding of the range of resources available to prospect researchers including, but not limited to, research software, and internet sources, print directories, and town records. Researcher must be inquisitive and thorough.
* Experience in prospect research methods and Information retrieval, evaluation and selection of relevant data, and interpretation of financial records and reports, preferably in the context of higher education advancement.
* Ability to interpret and synthesize large volumes of data and complex financial, legal and technical language into easily comprehensible Information, using multiple resources as needed.
