The School of Criminal Justice in the College of Public Affairs invites applications for a Forensic Science (open rank) faculty position. A non-tenure track, contractual “Executive-in-Residence” would be possible for a senior practitioner with substantial experience and an appropriate terminal degree. The appointment will begin in August 2020 and is contingent upon final budgetary approval.
The University of Baltimore, located in downtown Baltimore, is part of the University System of Maryland serving a diverse urban professional community. The School of Criminal Justice orients its academic priorities toward integration with the real world, capitalizing on geographic location in Baltimore, a real city that acts as an extended classroom and provides research opportunities. The School offers a B.S. and M.S. degree in Forensic Science, the undergraduate degree specializes in trace evidence, and the graduate degree is in digital forensic investigations (high technology crimes). The School is currently engaged in expansion of its academic programs related to forensic studies (which utilize state-of-the-art forensics laboratories and maintains a strong partnership with state and local police departments and the state medical examiner’s office.) Candidates should have experience with trace evidence associated in criminal investigations such as glass, plastic, fibers, paints, soil analysis. The individual should be familiar with instrumental analysis as well as microscopy. The successful candidate may have an opportunity for course development in their area of expertise. This position requires that the person hired be an active member of the faculty who contributes to program development, governance, and sustainability.
Candidates for this position should hold a Ph.D. in Forensic Science, or a Physical Science with professional experience in Forensic Science. Candidates for this position should demonstrate potential for or evidence of 1) scholarly achievement which may include peer-reviewed and other publications (books, monographs, applied research reports), experience with extramural grants and contracts, and recognition within his or her profession and/discipline, 2) quality instruction, curriculum design, and supervision of student projects where appropriate, and 3) service relevant to the university, academic profession, and/or community. Candidates considered as an Executive-in-Residence should demonstrate capacity for quality instruction and extensive experience and expertise in professional practice. The Forensic Science Program has 3 state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories. In addition, the new faculty will have the unique opportunity to work closely with staff from the Baltimore Police Department’s Crime Laboratory in linking students with forensic professionals. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
