The School of Public and International Affairs, in the College of Public Affairs, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor faculty position to begin in August 2019 (contingent on final budget approval). The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the M.A. program in Global Affairs and Human Security. There will also be the possibility of teaching in the undergraduate program in Policy, Politics, and International Affairs.
Competitive applicants will be able to contribute expertise related to international organizations, human security and/or sustainable development. A faculty hire whose work focuses on the developing world (particularly, Africa or Latin America) will be given preference, particularly if she/he has experience in one or more of the above content areas. Experience mentoring students through their master’s thesis or capstone will also be considered highly valuable. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and/ or course development related to international organizations or human security will be viewed favorably. The position is contingent upon final budget approval.
Candidates for this position must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree at the time of appointment in international development, international relations, political science, economics, public administration, public policy, or a related field of study.
Applicants should have a record of scholarly achievement that merits appointment at the assistant professor level, a record of scholarly achievement appropriate to success on the tenure-track, and demonstrate the potential for quality instruction. The position requires traditional classroom instruction at the graduate level and may also involve some undergraduate and/or online instruction. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate will be joining growing graduate programs in Global Affairs and Human Security, an applied cross-disciplinary masters program in the School of Public and International Affairs.
The 36-credit cross-disciplinary M.A. in Global Affairs and Human Security is designed to give students an opportunity to explore international issues related to good governance, sustainable development, transnational problem-solving and the promotion of human security. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in the nonprofit and public sectors and with supranational organizations.
The School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA), within which the program is housed, has twenty full-time faculty members with advanced degrees from an array of distinguished universities, including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, UC-Berkley, Columbia, and George Washington University, and George Mason University. Three faculty members are Fellows in the National Academy of Public Administration and one is a Fulbright Scholar. The School is home to a nationally accredited Master of Public Administration (MPA) program.
