Staff Attorney - Innocence Project Clinic - Grant-funded Contingent II
School of Law
Vacancy Number 300766
Position Type: Contingent II (contractual) exempt position with benefits
Opens: 03/24/17 Closes: 04/20/17
Salary: $55,000
The University of Baltimore School of Law has received a grant from the US Department of Justice for post-conviction testing of DNA evidence to exonerate the innocent. The staff attorney obtains and organizes all relevant documents for case reviews in appropriate cases that emerge during the grant period from the ongoing intake process and the fourteen FBI hair review cases described previously. In the cases that have already been identified as appropriate for DNA testing the attorney takes all necessary steps to locate and secure evidence for testing including providing legal representation in any proceedings relating to securing the testing. The attorney seeks to obtain testing by agreement with the prosecutor and if necessary, obtains court orders for testing, monitors the testing process and moves to vacate convictions in cases where the DNA evidence supports the client’s innocence claim. Additionally, the attorney oversees any related factual investigation of the case that may be necessary to locate physical evidence or to obtain information about the case that may be relevant to establishing the factual innocence of the client. The staff attorney is supervised by the Director of the UB Innocence Project Clinic and meets on a weekly basis to review cases and monitor progress on achieving the objectives of the grant program. The Clinic Director makes final determinations as to whether to request DNA testing in any particular case and supervises all case work activities of the staff attorney.
Education: Juris Doctorate required; admission to the Maryland Bar preferred.
Experience: Three years of experience as a practicing lawyer or paralegal in matters relating to wrongful convictions required. Experience with litigating post-conviction cases and with the litigation of post-conviction DNA testing cases, in particular, preferred. Demonstrated interest in the issue of wrongful convictions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent oral and written skills; a strong academic record and/or other indicia of high performance ability; and demonstrated interest in both the role of forensic science in criminal investigations and in the problem of wrongful convictions.
