The Physical Plant department is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of over 1 million square feet of space across 13 buildings and 11 acres located in midtown Baltimore. The Groundskeeper serves a critical function for the University by maintaining the grounds and facilities for the campus. You will be responsible for the upkeep of the outdoor space at the University and support the practice of sustainable landscaping while maintaining native gardens and green roofs. The Groundskeeper is an essential position as defined by the University System of Maryland, your work will be vital to the operation of the facility, and you will required to report to work regardless of the existence of a weather or emergency condition.
Key Functions & Responsibilities:
• Performs grounds maintenance activities including cultivating, planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, mowing and/or pruning lawn, gardens, shrubs and trees.
• Plants shrubs, trees, flowers, and vegetation following detailed plans and directions.
• Removes dirt, trash and debris from assigned areas and transports same to appropriate disposal facility.
• Operates hand and power equipment such as mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edger, shovels, and small vehicles. Performs routine assembly, cleaning and maintenance of equipment as needed.
• Measures, mixes and applies fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals within the confines of a non-licensed applicator.
• Performs removal of graffiti and other markings on campus buildings and structures.
• Performs removal of snow and ice from assigned areas using hand and power snow removal equipment. Spreads salt, sand, and deicers to prevent slipping.
• Perform other duties as assigned. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary depending on departmental requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
• Knowledge of the purpose and application of products and equipment used in grounds keeping.
• Knowledge and use of personal protective equipment.
• Skilled in time management.
• Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance to assigned hand and power tools and equipment.
• Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations.
• Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, information and ideas so others will understand.
• Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with others.
• Ability to stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time.
• Ability to reach overhead and below the knees
• Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs, and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, stretching, twisting in order to move machines and equipment or to handle materials.
• Ability to lift, transport, or carry supplies and refuse up to 50 pounds unassisted.
• Ability to push, pull or operate equipment up to 75 pounds unassisted.
• Ability to work at heights up to 35 feet.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
• Ability to perform work in, on, around, under and over trees, shrubs, buildings and other facilities.
Required Education: High School diploma or GED and a valid State of Maryland driver’s license
Required Experience: One year of professional grounds keeping, landscaping or related work experience
Preferred Education: Certified as a Landscape Technician or licensed agricultural pesticide applicator
Preferred Experience: Three years of professional grounds keeping, landscaping or related work experience
