Reporting directly to the Assistant Dean for Graduate Business Academic and Career Services the main purpose of this position is to serve students in all areas pertaining to academic affairs and student services. This individual interfaces with department chairs, graduate program directors, faculty, students, admissions and other university administrative offices, and other constituents of the University of Baltimore. In addition to implementing and developing strategies to enhance the academic operations of all graduate business programs, this individual must make independent judgments and decisions and act independently on behalf of the Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs and the Dean. This position requires an understanding of academic policies, a desire to serve the graduate business students of the Merrick School of Business, and to assist students with career development and management in partnership with the University’s Career Services Office. The individual must have the ability to establish an effective rapport with students, faculty and staff. The incumbent will represent the program both internally and externally and will collaborate with admissions and the Dean’s Office on recruitment initiatives; including open houses and recruiting visits for dual degree programs and corporate outreach initiatives to promote the program. Serve as academic adviser: Assist graduate students with course selection and development of a program plan of study for most efficient completion of the degree program based on students’ career and professional development objectives. Interpret and explain academic policies to students outlined in the academic catalog. Meet with enrolled and prospective students and advise them on program options, course scheduling and registration.
Monitor student progress: Provide recommendations to appropriate personnel for late withdrawals, grade disputes, and other student complaints/concerns that may arise. Oversee the process of probation and suspension for graduate students according to academic policy. Generate reports, send appropriate notification, post the corresponding status on student’s transcripts and advise students on their options to meet minimum GPA requirements. Provide information about academic requirements and resources (i.e., registration and withdrawal process, required grades, support services, transfer course evaluation) and academic deadlines.
Student success: Participate in student orientation and events that recognize scholastic achievement. Assist in planning and implementation of events and programs regarding career development. Assist students with registration and enrollment in special permission courses e.g. internships for academic credit, global field studies, independent studies. Coordinate with undergraduate advisors and provide course selection and programmatic advising for accelerated bachelors/masters students.
Operations: Admission, Enrollment, Student Processing: Make decision on routine graduate business admissions. Partner with the Admissions Office, the Assistant Dean Graduate programs and graduate program directors to manage the communication sequence to admitted and enrolled students. Provide outreach via email/phone encouraging students to register for the upcoming semester and tracking their response in PeopleSoft. Provide necessary data to the Dean’s offices for AACSB surveys, rankings, etc.
Act as a liaison between MSB graduate programs and dual degree programs and PBCs: Serve as liaison for all graduate dual degree programs by partnering with appropriate representatives of the MSB dual degree partner. Participate in recruitment activities; respond to student inquiries to provide details on requirements and academic policy for a dual degree program. Develop and maintain program plans of study for dual degree programs. Develop and maintain program plans of study for post-baccalaureate certificate programs.
Marketing: Contribute to marketing MSB’s programs and participate in the preparation of informational and marketing materials. Respond to new student inquiries and provide information to potential students about program requirements, tuition, scholarships and other services at information sessions, as well as recruitment visits to dual degree partner schools, graduate school fairs, corporate visits. Communicate information to students on upcoming events on campus, and potential scholarship, internship and career opportunities that become available.
Some evening/Saturday hours required for student appointments, open houses and recruitment events, and student events.
Required Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in Business, Economics, Accounting or related field
Experience: One to three years of progressively responsible work experience in a business or academic environment contributing to the ability of the incumbent to advise students on curricular, co-curricular, and career opportunities to best meet students career and professional development objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: MBA or specialist MS from an AACSB school or Masters in a related field
Experience: Three years of academic advising and/or academic program administration including knowledge of business school programs, curricula and enrollment trends is preferred. Experience with use of PeopleSoft or other SIS.
