The Instructional Designer promotes effective, innovative pedagogy in learning and teaching for all learning formats, including but not limited to online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. It facilitates professional development, positioning faculty as both instructors and experts in their fields. This position coordinates and supports the implementation of creative and innovative approaches to program development and student achievement, developing training and resources for faculty as appropriate. It promotes and enhances a culture of educational excellence at the University. This position provides limited day-to-day administrative oversight and support of the Sakai Learning Management System (LMS) and acts as a backup administrator for the cloud-based course evaluation system. Duties include:
Instructional Design and Support: Promotes effective, innovative pedagogy in learning and teaching in support of student success.
• Promotes instructional design best practices working with faculty on the development of online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses, implementing strategies and appropriate technologies for adult learners.
• Designs and implements outcomes and competency-based instruction and assessment tools, to be used in courses in all delivery modes.
• Partners with the Office of Technology Services (OTS) to promote and facilitate best practices and appropriate use of the University’s instructional technology resources, and to assist faculty in evaluating new instructional software.
Faculty Professional Development: Provides training for faculty, improving educational outcomes.
• Participates in the delivery of a comprehensive program for faculty development including orientations, workshops, certification training, seminars, conferences, summer and academies.
• Develops and maintains resources and training materials that emphasize current educational research and best practices.
Course Evaluation System Administration, Operations and Communications: Assists with administration, planning and implementation of campus wide course evaluations in support of a consistent effective mechanism for student feedback.
• Assists with Implementing course evaluations, processes and communication plans for each academic term.
• Assists with working with Associate Deans to customize course evaluations as appropriate.
• Assists with distributing reports as appropriate.
• Assists with developing ad-hoc reports as necessary or requested.
• Assists with executing test plans for software systems as needed.
• Assists with analyzing reports; recommends faculty development initiatives based on results.
Learning Management System Operations and Support: Assists with the daily operations and support of the Sakai LMS, resulting in an effective learning experience for students and a supportive, enabling teaching experience for faculty.
• Assists with managing daily operations of LMS support and related workflow, tracking requests in campus ticketing system.
• Assists with managing the creation and modification of LMS course sites, including oversight of user enrollments.
• In partnership with the Office of Disability Support Services, assists with validating accessibility of course content.
• Develops and provides user training, including workshops, for faculty and students.
e-Learning is a 24/7 operation. Although most components of the job fit as a traditional work schedule, there is an expectation of a varied schedule within the academic semester.
Required Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in instructional design, educational technology or related area.
Experience: Three years of experience in instructional technology, curriculum development, course design, and learning management platforms. Instructional design of fully-online courses and degree programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology or related social sciences.
Experience: Three years of experience including working with online course quality assurance programs in higher education (e.g., Quality Matters, Online Learning Consortium). Learning Management Systems (LMS) background is preferred to include Sakai.
