The Career Services Manager promotes the success and career outcomes of UBalt students by helping the UBalt Career and Internship Center (CIC) accomplish three primary strategic goals: (1) develop expert career managers; (2) promote the integration of career development campus wide, and (3) facilitate synergy between students, alumni and the employment community. The incumbent manages the front desk operations of the CIC including developing protocols and procedures for greeting stakeholders and in taking clients, recruiting, onboarding and supervising the front desk staff consisting of student workers, and manages the career center phones and email inbox. The Career Manager provides direct services to one of the three UBalt academic Colleges: Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, College of Public Affairs or Merrick School of Business. Direct services include: providing transformational career coaching and advising (onsite, virtually and by phone) to students and alumni following UBalt’s Career Cycle and GROW methodology; designing and facilitating career development workshops and presentations for small and large audiences; utilizing online tools, systems and resources to help students through the career decision making process; administering and interpreting a variety of career assessments. Other duties include developing and implementing innovate programs tailored to specific industries and student populations, assessing events and learning outcomes, assisting with destination data collection, supporting recruitment events and department wide initiatives. In addition, the incumbent uses Symplicity to manage events, promote programs, communicate with students, track data and administer surveys. Promotes the visibility of the CIC to prospective and current UBalt students and serves as a consultant and business partner to faculty concerning the career development, workforce development and employability of UBalt students in related sectors.

Operations & Supervision: Maintain direct responsibility for 5 – 10 front desk assistants including recruiting, onboarding, training and evaluating student employees. Provides pre and post professionalism assessment of student employees and assumes a developmental management style. Provides documentation on the effectiveness and impact of student staff on services. Ensures CIC front lobby is safe, accommodating and inclusive for entire CIC staff and all visitors. Ensures that front desk supports CIC staff, programming initiatives, events, and services.
Career Coaching: Meets aggressive student success goals related to student utilization of the CIC and the gainful employment of UBalt students upon graduation through high quality, transformational career coaching for students and alumni utilizing the CIC GROW coaching methodology. Administers and interprets career assessments for individuals and small groups including the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory. Advises students on their progression through the UBalt Career Cycle and serves as a content expert for career management, career advancement, research, and employment trends. Guides students in the development of resumes, professional letters, and other related documents. Provides editing and grammar reviews of professional documents in person and electronically including the processing of online resumes using the review module in Symplicity. Oversees Career Resource Library.
Customer Service Oversight: Manages front desk in-take procedures and maintains the visitor lobby of the CIC. Implements student kiosk check-in and exit surveys to track student usage of CIC services and satisfaction with their experience in the CIC. Oversees the CIC email in-box and ensures that stakeholders are responded to within in timely fashion.
Campus & Community Outreach: Cultivates and supports faculty in assigned industry by serving as a subject-matter-expert and business partner on the local labor market and career development. Provides timely, accurate and appropriate follow-up to faculty concerning the career development and recruitment of UB students. Collaborates with faculty on designing, planning and implementing career interventions in the classroom and programmatically. Serves as CIC Business to other campus units. Designs interventions, programs and services for the aforementioned populations and stays up-to-date on trends and best practices regarding their career needs.
Programming Support: Designs and implements career development programming directed at specific industries and student populations. Displays excellent event planning and management skills including budgeting, marketing, logistics and vendor relations (i.e. Catering, florists, etc.). Supports CIC departmental events including career fairs, networking events and programs targeted toward special populations. Represents the CIC at enrollment events and division wide events such as orientation. Expertly uses Symplicity to manage outcomes, coordinate events, and communicate with students, faculty and employers. Implement and manage industry clusters in-person and online to help build synergy between students and the employment community.
Required Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in Psychology/Counseling, Communications, English, Journalism, Business or a related field.
Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience in career services or advising in higher education or a related industry.
Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Psychology, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Communications, Business or related field.
Preferred Certifications: GCDF, Coaching, Resume, MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, StrengthsQuest
Preferred Experience: Five years professional experience in career services, career coaching or academic advising.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficient knowledge of career services development and planning; career center operations, advising students; event management; excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to plan and manage events. Proficiency using technology including career management system, databases and Microsoft Office. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with students, administrators, faculty, staff and parents. Experience in working with diverse populations including undergraduate and graduate. Experience in working in highly collaborative environments and demonstrated ability to work in a team giving and receiving feedback. Effective oral, written, editing and interpersonal communication skills. Experience administering and interpreting career assessments. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and using career management systems. Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evening and weekend hours. Takes personal responsibility for developing career interventions for students within assigned industry and develops effective working relationships with faculty, advisors and staff in assigned college. Contributes ideas and shares information within and across the CIC and colleges; shares lessons learned, outcomes and assessment results. Displays cooperative and open-minded behavior in working with others. Takes responsibility for continuous development and performance improvement to meet departmental objectives. Continually builds on and develops conceptual knowledge bases. Anticipates stakeholder needs, adapts to change and takes extra steps to overcome negative responses or barriers to effectiveness.
Preferred: Career coaching, advising or counseling. GCDF certification or counseling/coaching certification. Experience working with administrative and academic personnel including faculty. Experience in event planning and promotion.
Experience working directly with and supervising students. Experience designing curriculum including learning outcomes, grading rubrics and learning modules. Experience developing an assessing learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
