Renacer, a 1998 bronze sculpture by Jorge Jiménez Deredia
DOG, a 1981 bronze sclupture by Fernando Botero
Both of these pieces and more than a dozen others are part of a collection donated by Samuel G. Rose, LL.B. '62, to The University of Baltimore.
Through the generosity of Samuel G. Rose, LL.B. '62, a retired commercial real estate developer and a long-time friend and supporter of his alma mater, The University of Baltimore is proud to announce the placement of some 15 sculptures from Rose's esteemed collection at various locations on the UBalt campus.
Soon, campus visitors will be invited to take a virtual guided tour of these works, which range from tabletop pieces located in various building lobbies to large-scale works intended for display in a dedicated outdoor space. The works, created by renowned artists including Beniamino Bufano, Anthony Caro, Margery Goldberg, Frank Gehry, Jorge Jiménez Deredia, Colin Selig and others, are part of an eclectic collection amassed over a lifetime by Rose.
The collection will reside permanently on the University campus, as a gift from Rose to the institution. They are an important part of UBalt's impressive holdings of creative works, which include paintings, lithographs, sculptures, and other pieces of historical significance.
Samuel G. Rose obtained his law degree while attending night classes at The University of Baltimore School of Law. In 2022, he established a $5 million fund dedicated to undergraduate scholarships at UBalt. This generous fund, which set a single-donor record for cash contributions to the University, represents Rose's commitment to future generations of hard-working undergraduate students at his alma mater. Among his previous support is the expansion of an emergency fund for students who were determined to continue their studies during the recent pandemic.
Rose, who lives part-time in both Maryland and Florida, had a highly successful career in commercial real estate, largely in metropolitan Washington, D.C., and worked for corporations including the Rouse Co. and the American Trading & Production Corp. He currently serves as a member of The University of Baltimore's President's Council, and previously served as vice chair of the board of directors for the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He has long credited his UBalt law degree as instrumental in his professional success.
With the gift of these art pieces, Rose's generosity to the campus continues. It will greatly enhance life at the University during the celebration of its Centennial, enlivening spaces at the midtown campus and encouraging anyone who appreciates fine art to get to know more about UBalt.
