General-Education Requirements Fall 2014 to Spring 2016

These requirements apply to:

all new freshmen (fewer than 24 college credits) who entered UBalt between fall 2014 and spring 2016
all new students entering UBalt between fall 2014 and spring 2016

Note: Students enrolled during this general education program can opt-in to the current general education requirements (implemented fall 2016). Please contact your adviser to make the change.

UB's General Education program focuses on six broad areas that provide the essential skills, competencies and habits of mind that all undergraduate students need to thrive in a complex, ever-changing world. Those areas are:

Quantitative and Qualitative Thinking
Critical Thinking and Ethical Reasoning
Communication
Global and Intercultural Knowledge
Humanistic and Aesthetic Thinking
Personal and Professional Skills

Gen Ed courses must be completed with a grade of C- or better, except those indicated *, which must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Additional Guidelines for All Students

While satisfying the requirements in the six general-education areas, all students must take Ethical Issues in Business and Society (IDIS 302)*.

If you DON'T have an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree:

Take at least one designated general-education course from each of these three areas:

Literature
Fine Arts
History or Philosophy

If you have an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree:

and your major is in the College of Public Affairs or Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences:

Take three courses (9 credits) plus the capstone in the major. All other general-education requirements are satisfied by the associate degree.

Ethical Issues in Business and Society (IDIS 302)*
Composition and Research (WRIT 300)*
any additional 300-level general-education course

and your major is in the Merrick School of Business:

Take these two courses (6 credits) plus the capstone in the major. All other general-education requirements are satisfied by the associate degree.

Composition and Research (WRIT 300)*

Students who hold an Associate of Applied Science degree will have their previous coursework evaluated on a course-by-course basis.
