Frequently asked questions about The Samuel Rose Scholars AwardWhat is the scholars award?
This award fund was established by Samuel G. Rose, LL.B. '62, a retired commercial real estate developer who obtained his law degree while attending night classes at The University of Baltimore School of Law. The fund provides financial assistance to students who might not otherwise be able to complete their undergraduate degrees.
Interestingly, the funding for the Rose award was generated from an art sale involving American filmmaker George Lucas, best known as the creator of the Star Wars franchise. Lucas and his wife founded The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, which includes works by well-known Black artists. Rose is a collector of pieces by Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden, two acclaimed Black artists, and earlier this year Rose sold a pair of works by those artists to the Lucas Museum, and used the proceeds to fund the award. Can I apply this scholars award toward any degree program at UBalt?
