Administrative History: Established in 1958, Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc., a citizens' organization, was formed to promote an open housing market and viable integrated neighborhoods in the Baltimore area. It was estab- lished by several neighborhood associations and supported by civic organizations like the Greater Baltimore Committee. The early thrust of the organization was to obtain open housing and stable neighborhoods during a period of widespread white flight and block busting in Baltimore City. Through education and advocacy, it sought to counter racial prejudice, to fight discrimination in the real estate industry, and to combat neighbor- hood deterioration resulting from segregated housing. More recently it has favored affirmative action activities and has acted to assist tenants in tenant~landlord disputes. Heading Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc. is a Board of Directors which is elected annually and five officials (president, two vice-presidents, treasur- er and secretary). Work is done by a staff and through program committees such as H.O.M.E., Tenant-Landlord Relations, and Human Relations. Membership is both institutional and individual. Important Subjects: Open housing, integration, neighborhood stabilization, block busting, real estate business, savings and loans, tenants, affirmative::.action blacks, prejudice.
