Denisha Hobbs, M.P.A. student
"The best feature with online courses is that I can get work done anywhere. The M.P.A. program is flexible: you can take all your courses online…or one in-person and one online."
When Denisha Hobbs decided to pursue a Master of Public Administration, she knew she wanted to take online classes so she could make the most of her time.
“The best feature with online courses is that I can get work done anywhere. The M.P.A. program is flexible for students; you can take all your courses online like me, or one in-person and one online (or more).”
Taking classes online has its perks, too. Hobbs has sometimes been able to get weeks ahead by completing multiple assignments when she knows she has more time.
She has also found it easier to reach out to her classmates. One of the first things her professors have the class do is introduce themselves in a discussion post, which helps everyone, including the professor, get to know each other, she says.
That’s a critical first step, she says, because with online classes, “communication is needed even more.”
“If I plan out my assignments, readings and quizzes, I have more time for other things. I work, so managing time is important,” Hobbs says. “There are moments where I slip (life happens), but my professors are always there if I need a little help.”
A Healthcare Policy and Administration M.P.A. candidate, Hobbs says she wants to make sure she graduates with the knowledge and opportunities that will set her apart in her career. Her online classes have given her the flexibility to pursue fellowships and internships related to her passions. She has also worked as an academic coach at UBalt’s Robert L. Bogomolny Library and worked as an orientation leader to usher in new UBalt students.
“I came here with my only expectation to get my master’s, so everything else has been icing on the cake,” Hobbs says.”
