Opeyemi Thomas, B.S. ‘18
"I was originally at CCBC, and UBalt was a school that you heard a lot about. It’s right in the center of the city, around a lot of great opportunity and I just thought it was a perfect fit for me to transfer to [the] University of Baltimore."
Opeyemi Thomas struggled to find his calling—until he transferred to UBalt.
His aspirations of what he wanted to be when he grew up kept ranging, running the gamut from performer to stockbroker. While he may have been undecided as to which profession to pursue, he did know one thing: "I wanted to do something that excited me," he says.
After he transferred from the Community College of Baltimore County to the University of Baltimore, he found his focus. He wanted to be an entrepreneur and UBalt had the path to get him there.
"Entrepreneurship for me is the best way … I can add the most value to the world,” he says. “[At UBalt] I wanted to not only learn, but do and create."
Thomas had dabbled in startups before. He worked with a team to create a software solution to tackle overfishing in West Africa and while at CCBC, he developed a concept for a web-based, on-demand tutoring platform.
As an Entrepreneurship Fellow at UBalt, Thomas worked with like-minded students to develop Roadi, a mobile application aimed at solving parking challenges in Baltimore. The idea was based on personal experience and research for different class assignments.
Thomas had heard a lot about UBalt when he was at his community college.
"I was originally at CCBC and UBalt was a school that you heard a lot about. It’s right in the center of the city, around a lot of great opportunity and I just thought it was a perfect fit for me to transfer to the University of Baltimore," he says.
He took advantage of a UBalt admission event called Transfer Decision Day, when prospective students can apply, get a same-day admission decision, and even enroll in classes. He was glad to know right away that he would be a University of Baltimore student.
"It was a perfect fit for me to transfer to the University of Baltimore," he says. "UB is community. UBalt is resources. UBalt is knowledge."
