Zachary Nelson, B.S. ’17, MBA ‘19
Zachary Nelson’s first foray into business came when he was in eighth grade. Joined by his younger brother, he built a lawn care business to 25 regular customers by knocking on doors around their neighborhood looking for work.
“That was my first touch point of what business is, but I didn’t want to just cut lawns forever,” says Nelson, who turned his childhood experience into a career focus. “Specifically why I wanted to major in [business] was the idea of social entrepreneurship and the idea that business is not just about getting rich—of course that’s a good side effect—but the way I looked at it, the way I was raised, is that the most important thing you can do in the world is to help other people.”
Nelson started pursuing business as a major at Carroll Community College.
“I transferred to the University of Baltimore after completing 13 years of homeschooling and two years of community college. UBalt [has] one of the most flexible business schools in Maryland and it offers students tremendous value.”
He enjoyed his time at UBalt so much that when he earned his B.S. in Business Administration, he decided to stay for the MBA program. He graduated with his MBA in May 2019.
“UB is a place where the students think for themselves and the teachers give everything they have.”
Nelson spoke highly of his professors in the Merrick School of Business and called some of the lectures he heard “exciting and inspirational.”
“They really are teaching me how to think. … The things that we’re consciously learning in class and working really hard and intentionally learning these models and things—they’re actually getting absorbed. So when we see a problem we’re not referring to our notes anymore.”
