Talking to the Enemy: The South African Case Study

a conversation with author and professor Willie Esterhuyse
College of Public Affairs Speaker Series

Join us for a light reception at 5 p.m. in the Hilda and Michael Bogomolny Room.

Philosophy professor Willie Esterhuyse, author of Endgame: Secret Talks and the End of Apartheid, provides a fascinating firsthand look at the political transformation in South Africa in 1990.

Esterhuyse will describe his participation with former South African President Thabo Mbeki and others in the secret negotiations that led to the release of Nelson Mandela and, ultimately, the end of apartheid.

Esterhuyse's book is also the source for the 2009 feature film Endgame, in which William Hurt portrays Esterhuyse. Enjoy excerpts from the film and participate in a discussion about contemporary South Africa and the impact of the peaceful conclusion to apartheid.
