We welcome Professor Desirée Melton of Notre Dame of Maryland University
“Black Girl Burden: Myth-Making and the Failure to Self-Care”
Compared to other groups, black women are the least likely to seek and engage in self-care. This is especially true of black women who have internalized the myth of the “strong black woman.” In this talk, Professor Melton argues that black women should be circumspect of the recent phenomenon of “black girl magic.” Her concern is that internalizing a magical quality could function like the myth of the strong black woman and contribute to our failure to practice self-care.
